Hi,
I have an 2002 Viper ER with the original track with 900 miles on it. I was thinking about having the track studded. My local Yamaha dealer suggested using Kold Kutter studs instead. Has anyone used these and if so, what type of patter would be best? I bought a bag of 250 and seeing it's 60 here today, I thought I would put them in.
Thanks,
Tom

Install about half of them that way you have spares, and always ride last so you don't kill any friends. Do a search on here for lug studs, the results haven't been very good. They also don't work like real studs, the traction just isn't there. maxdlx

Thanks. I want them mainly for a little extra traction on the trails, I don't plan on racing or even driving on frozen lakes, I figured it would help in tracking and stopping with out spending a bunch of time and money.

I ran kold kutters in my ice tires for my race bike.... Put 1200 in the rear tire, abotu 1400 in the front and they work great. On a snowmobile however, i feel like they would only be beneficial if you ran alot of them in each lug, and rode on hardpack or ice for the best benefit. As a word of advice, get the longest studs you can without going through the inside of the track. I ran 1" ers in my ice tires. I would think if you had a 1" lug, run 3/4 or 7/8" ones.... This way they might not rip out as easily. Also, you can tune these studs for traction in different patterns.

If you do it, post up some pictures of your track and i can give you my advice on which way to tune them in. Also, i would periodically check for any studs that have backed out and tighten them accordingly. I would hate to see one get thrown through a cooler.

(all of my advice is adapted from ice race dirtbikes)
