how to grease a vmax???

hello, question, im not very handy, but I want to attempt to grease my 96 vmax 600. I found an owners manual for a 1998 vmax, and I figure it is more or less the same, but in that manual it shows where to apply the grease on the front suspension and on the rear suspension, what it doesnt say is how to do this? do I have to unscrew anything? or just apply the grease on these points? are there any bolts to remove? Im not very handy, and im afraid I may make things worse by removing something...also, What kind of grease is good? is it certain grease that I can find at walmart? and can this grease also be used on the clutches? I appreciate it,,thanks, Pete
 
I used any kind of grease, like marine grade from walmart would work, some guys get piky on this and get red ones or even some that can stand freezing temps. In my opinion they are all the same.

On my 99 I just squirt a few pumps after every ride, that way I keep the water out of all the moving parts.

Where to and how ? Just look for every single grease zerk on the sled and pump it till you see it coming out, nothing to unscrew or take apart.

Regarding the clutches, where in them do you want to use grease...? I don't think there is anywhere to grease unless you are talking the primary out and want to pump some inside the bolt hole to create an hydraulic action...Hope this make sense to you.....

the points they show are where the grease fittings are. synthetic grease is your best bet. i use red and tacky by lucas. marine grease is also good. anything is better than nothing.
 
meant to say the sheave, not the clutch

I took the secondary sheave off this morning, and it looked like there was grease on the big bolt that the sheave attaches to...does this need greasing? thanks, Pete
 
No grease there, that just must be oil/gas/belt dust mixture....just wipe it down and re install after inspecting. You could check the buttons, spring and sheaves. It wont hurt to clean it up also.....Just grap some soapy warm water and clean all the dir/grime out, then let it dry or hairdryer and reinstall...

I use the Amsoil synthetic water resistant grease on everything I own. I like it alot and have used it for about 7 years now and i use it on all my trailers as well. I use it in my Jet skis, 4 wheelers and snowmobiles.
 
i beleive its the Deluxe vmax

it does not have the xt on the side..it is blue, w/2up seat, reverse and electric start

well then you'll only have i think 2 in the skid,one in the rear and one up
front. then the two on the pivot joint up by the strut tower..

crawl under and look you'll see 'em..make sure you use a low temp grease so the joins stay flexible if it's not low temp parts will move hard when the grease gets cold/freeze hampering the ride some..yamaha makes a good low
temp winter grease thats not to badly priced,,it's even blue...lol

what is it that im looking for?

thanks for all the help....what is it that im looking for? is it those wheels in the back end? I figured thats what I greased, the wheels? Im sorry, but im that new to snowmobiles, I still dont know the names to most of the parts, Im not sure what it looks like(where im supposed to grease). what do the grease fittings look like? thanks, Pete
 
no not the wheels the suspention piviot points,a little tit looking thing
that the grease gun snaps onto,,you have never greased anything???
 
not really...LOL!!!! do I need a special tip on the grease gun? or will any grease gun work?
 
does the fitting look like a little tiny nipple? I think i found one on a picture..looks pretty easy to find.. is this grease fitting a universal size? or do I need a special adapter for the grease gun from Yamaha? and please forgive me, I am not mechanical at all, but Im really trying to learn..thanks....
 
we all have to start someplace,,yes it looks like a nipple no special adapter
all grease fittings are about the same..
 
great..thanks for the help..looks like im out to wallyworld tomorrow to buy a grease gun......How much grease do I add? do I add it till it starts leaking out?
