I'd think it would break on the chaincase end if it was a power thing. You need to figure that only 1/2 of the torque being applied to the shaft would be transmitted to the opposite end. I'd guess that you may have hit something a while back and maybe bent the shaft slightly, or maybe cracked it, and with time and fatigue it finally gave out. I bet that made a little noise when it did!

i remember reading a few years back that on the earlier pro actions axle they were weaker because of the material make up of the steel,,later years were harder...somthing along that line.
