what oil to use

seems to me there was a bolt you could pull out on the gear box to check the level. its hard to remember but i think its 80-90. I dont remember which bolt it is either. Maybe look in the tech section.

about center of chain case cover, about 2" from the bottom is a bolt that takes a 10mm wrench. if you remove this and oil seeps out, its full. if not, its low. add oil till it starts to dribble out. case capacity is 300cc, sae75w80. if you want to replace the oil, there is a cover bolt down low that has a copper type sealing washer, this is the drain hole if i remember correctly, directly below that was a drain hole in the belly pan.

Do a search there are a few good debates over the chaincase oil to use.

The above is all correct the drain hole is at the bottom and the bolt by itself in the middle a inch or 2 off the bottom is the check bolt.

Just stick with any good brand name full synthetic oil of your choice, people use anything from ATF to gear lube..try a search

any special way to drain these?

is there enough room under the drain plug, to slip a small pan?

i think there's a hole in the plastic belly pan that when you pull the plug it'll
drain out then out through the hole in the belly pan into the drain pan on the floor

is this the same for reverse?

is this the same setup as a vmax 600 w/reverse? do the same procedure? drain from bottom, and fill from top, until it comes out of the middle bolt? thanks

should be the same yes....

Just another tip would be to take the cover off of your chaincase.
Very easy to do.
That way you can really clean it out and get an understanding of what's going on in there. Amsoil is great.

I'm tryin to remember on a 94 vmax we had. I have always taken the cover off to change oil. That way you will get out all the metal filings. I was always the kid who took apart things to see how they tick! I'm 99.9% sure it's the rubber type.
Take it apart and we'll both know for sure!

Rick.
