engine problems,, maybe oil pump

Im going to check the fuel filtre, tors, and then disengage the oil pump and add oil too my gas tank, put in new plugs and see what happens....
I should be about a litre of oil for the gas tank right...Do I just disconnect the oil pump throttle cable, wont it still inject some oil at the closed position. Should I disconect the line as well...
thanks
mike

I just threw some new plugs in it... I ran like crap... no change,,,,
So plugs are not fouled. The ones I took out look fine, even my freind looked at them, and said the old ones look perfect.. It wont even throttle up at all now.... just sputters up too speed... idles perfect, starts perfect. On the stand it revs up fine....
I was trying to think back ... it seems it always had a slight sputter that has gotten worse and worse over the about 2 tanks of gas. That is as long as I have owned it....
So I dont think the oil pump is the issue. It kinda pointed that way,but with brand new plugs it is running no better, should have at least ran for a little while before fouling plugs,,,,so now what,,,,
Could it be the tors system, and how do I disengage it.... I checked it, I held the thumb button out while pushing on the throttle and it didnt do anything, ran same as when i just let the thumb throttle do its own thing,,,,,
still cant find the fing fule filtre......ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ok bypassed the rops system, sled ran better right away, after a while decided too hook it back up,,sled still ran great. Missed a little at wide open throttle. This was with an old set of plugs again.. Put in some br8es,thats all i had left. Disconnected rops again, sled ran perfect.....130km per hour.... only hting is, now my gas gage stopped working,,,,,hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
oh well at least it is working again,,,, any comments,,,,
thanks mike

Double check the wires that you disconnected you might have unpluged the gas gage. You might want to clean the carbs real good there is some good step by step directions on this site. Take the top of the airbox off and take a look at the carbs, i bet they are dirty. Did you inspect the clutch?

sorry i mean tors system. I double checked it is the tors i bypassed. it has two plugs that i disconnected and then hook them together to bypass....
it runs good now... maybe a slight stumble occasionally....
is the gas gage hooked to the same wire as the tors system..
hmmmmmmm

Not sure, trace the wires coming from the gas tank. It might be a ground wire loose somewhere. If you think that is the tors, loosen the throttle cable a bit then hook it back up.

If the TORS is acting up, you will not be able to rev over like 2800 rpm. I thougth I had a TORS issue this weeekend, but itt ended up being some bolt or screw ont he shaft connecting the second carb to the first. It would only run to 45 mph, and almost sounded like a 4 stroke. It was a dog as well, So basically it was trying to run with only 1 carb slide opening. It was fixed in 20 minutes.

Also, fwiw, my new oil pump on my 97 600 venture was a huge fix. It doesn't quite sip oil yet, but it sure does not foul plugs now, and has more power. The dreamometer reads over 90 on the lake with a bit of powder. So I am pretty impresssed that this 2 up runs this well.

I think your premixing of gas proved that the pump is indeed bad. I know it is not cheap, but it is the correct way to fix it. IMHO, yamaha should have recalled these back in the day instead of waiting to see who would bring these 97 600 twin powered machines in with excessive oil usage from poorly designed pumps. A recall is a much better idea than a tsb, wait and see method, but this was uncommon for yamaha who is typically very good on taking care of its customer's. In my case, the issue was due to me noticing this issue after purchasing this mahine after it was 10+ years old, and the original owner was apparently not so observant or savvy.

I guess if the pumps would have failed not pumping enough oil, yamaha would have ended up rebuilding these motors and replacing the oil pumps at the same time. Yamaha did also have problems with the ring locator falling out on these 97 600 twins and when that happened, the rings would spin, and snag on a port and destroy the top end.
