96 vmax rear suspension. when i push down it just stays down, when i lift up it will stay all the way up. i also greased all the fittings. should there be a happy medium where it should stand or is this normal. if so would i be better off with new aftermarket shocks or have them rebuilt?

mine did the same , i ended up pulling the skid out and disassembling the entire thing. i thought the shock was bad , ended up being a siezed pivot shaft on the rear and just about every bushing worn out. id say pull it out and go thru the entire rear suspension , most likely shock will be good and the rest of it siezed up. there are alot of points that should be greesable but arent. once reassembled with every cleaned and greesed it was like new.

yup pull the skid out and disassemble, clean old grease out replace any worn
out bushings then re grease with a low temp winter grease..

a few bolts,,two up front and few in the back, lay down by your sled and look you'll see..on the side of the tunnle..

I havn't had a chance to look yet but besides the bolts through the tunnel what else do I disassemble and is there anything major to mess up if I do something wrong or is it pretty self explanatory. I am pretty handy I do custom car audio every day but electrical to me is a walk in the park Mechanical stuff I am alright at

this should help you , replace all bushings.

go to track suspension 1 & 2 diagram and it shows you the parts break down and even gives you the part numbers to order. its not as complicated as it looks. on mine the rear pivot was corroded solid , once pushed down it stayed all the way down. once done it was perfect action up and down. i almost did the same and was looking for shocks befor i decided to look farther into the problem. glad i did , saved alot of money.

Yep hit up CBperformance on here i think 2000srx is the name and you can get the bushing kits from them fairly reasonable. Mine skid was had almost every if not every bushing gone and a couple shafts were wiped out welded a couple of them back up to size and put it back together everything works great now.

Just take your time and make sure to lock-tite anything on the skid back together when you are done. And grease it good.

Also check the bottom of the front arm where it meats the triangle on the rail they are notorious for cracking that bracket.

As far as removal its fairly easy, Loosen the rear axle and slid it as far forward as possible. I find it a little easier if you can compress the front shock and slide the front arm down under the drive shaft then you can pull the rear out.

To re-install you need to slide the front in under the drive shaft then line it up in the track, pull straight back and have someone push the front shaft up and into the support brackets inside the tunnel.

Also you may want to replace the highfax's or atleast make sure you can get the screws out of the rails. My Xt and DX both had a screw seized in them that i was able to drill out with the skid out, if i wanted to replace the hifaxes with it in the sled i would not have been able to do so.

As far as the shocks are concerned if they are bad pioneer performance can rebuild them i think its around 50bux a shock not positive on their prices though. If you remove the shocks be VERY careful when pulling the bushing out of the eyelet as they have needle bearings that like to fall apart and are a pain to put back together.

I found 2 more fittings to grease ofter clearing off some snow put about 30 miles on today and seems to be a little better. when I push it all the way down it will come back up about 4 inches. hopefully that will get me through for a while. I just don't have a garage to work on it in.
