Please forgive the noob question, but I have been reading and trying to learn for the past few days.

I am in the middle of a viper rebuild and am just looking to try and do all of the mods now for as little $$ as possible :bump:

I found someone selling a set of worked 98 SRX heads that he belives have 40 thou milled off of them with a 35-40 squish area.

Compression on his SRX with these heads was 170ish so I am wondering how this would work with the viper.

Is it the difference in the cylinder and the porting that allows the viper to use a tighter 21cc chamber from the factory versus the 24cc on the 00-02 SRX's and the 26cc on the 98-99's?

Oh and I believe that Dr. Viper is running ones that are cut 30 thou with two base gaskets as has a compression of 120...
Thanks in advance! :2strokes:

The diff. is that the SRX has no head gasket just O rings so the head sets flat on the cyl. and the Viper does. so if you run a full stock viper head gasket (3 layers)Or just take the center one out. I think the heads should be ok to run. each layer is .010 and the center layer is I think .015 or .020. min squish for pump gas is about .052

Thank you sir, I was hoping that you would chime in.

Are you running two base gaskets, or just one?
(Thought i read one of your posts that you were running two)

If the squish is say .040 how would that be on pump gas?

I will be running 93 octane.

On pump gas with a stock Squish angle that's not good! You'll need way more than pump gas.

Well if he has .040 of squish now the head gaskets should add some to that correct? Since the SRX is o-ringed and the viper actually uses a gasket.

Yep,

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something doesn't add up! Stock 98 heads had a tad over .065" squish. If they were cut down .04" that would give you .025" squish. So he added base gaskets to raise the Cyl and head away from the piston. Be sure to find out how many base gaskets he added to you can match it, then figure out how thick the head gasket is COMPRESSED! Lets just say the head gasket is .01". If you match his base gasket thickness, then you'll have .05" squish. Which is still over board with stock squish angle and a SMALL CHAMBER. So be sure to do your measurements, and hope the head gasket is over .015" compresses which it should be.

Also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The chamber will be really small with .04" taken off, which will raise your compression. Since you'll be adding base gasket and a head gasket it will lower the compression, only B/C the piston will be below deck.

When I got my heads done (98 heads) I cc'ed them before and After I got each step done. I got them shaved .007", which lowered the chamber size by 1.5-2cc!!!! The same amount of volume is take out of the head on any flat mill. So unless you start cutting into the squish band it'll take 1.5-2cc every .007" off. This is hard to explain. Of course when you start tapering the squish band that removes material, which enlarges the Chamber size. Which indeed lowers compression. I think I know who's heads you're talking about, if I'm correct they still have the stock squish angle. I would AT LEAST machine the squish angle out to 12-13*. Not only will this ensure a better burn in the head, it will lower your compression/enlarge the Chamber size slightly.

......................

no i didnt run a double base gasket.....has 70 tho squish and now has 40 tho squish....if he runs a stock viper gasket which i believe is 25 tho. he will be fine!

So they were shaved .03" not .04"??

Ok, with that said You'll be safe to run these heads. Look into a slightly thinner head gasket, .018". What do the heads CC in at? 20ish???

.........

didnt cc them........i wouldnt sell them to a guy for a trail srx but were he is running a "gasket" on a viper i think he will be fine...plus i think he said he was gonna run a double base gasket....i dont know about viper motors but he prob will run 140-150 lbs of comp???

Yes I believe that this is close to the setup that Dr. Viper is running, I believe that he is also running two base gaskets and the stock viper head gasket.

IIRC he has 120 pounds of compression and is using stock jetting with bender triple pipes...

well let me know if you still want them and also the heat exchanger

I'll take 'em and try them out, i'll let you know on the heat exchanger too...

I'll send you a PM
