Take digital pics before you start, makes life easier. Not sure if the 96 has heated carbs, and i think the cdi is mounted on the airbox you will need to unplug the wires(least of your worries).

no need to plug the gas lines.none will come out.(only whats in the lines from the carbs to the pump)..nothing will come out of the carbs how ever you hold them.

yankeeslover, the only way you will learn is by doing it yourself, My saying is, it always LOOKS hard, but you do it once then you will know how to do it forever. Its not as scary as it looks, just take your time and know where everything goes, by either taking pics or visualizing it.

I'm in the same boat as you I have a 96 Vmax and have never taken apart a carb. I bought mine from a guy who says they were good but he was playing salesman they will say anything. After reading all these posts I am going to pull mine apart tomorrow. So you should do the same whats the worst that could happen? You have to take it to the dealer. You were thinking of doing that anyway.

You should tell us where in NY you are located. There are many of us who would be willing to meet you and help you with the carb cleaning. If you within a hour driving distance from me, I'd be happy to meet you and help you with the carbs. Your sled is running fine now but could be dead very soon if the main jets are partially plugged. Like others have said, these sleds will demonstarte superior top end performance as they are destroying themselves from running very lean. It is not worth taking the risk, you could be risking many hundreds of dollars of engine damage and a very short season.
I am near Pougkeepsie, NY and would be willing to help you with the carbs.

Johnstown
Im located in Johnstown....about 5 miles south of Adirondack border. My brother and I are going to tear this apart today. Let me ask, is it worth me removing the float also? I heard I may do more harm then good removing the float..is this true? thanks, Pete

You probably won't need to remove the floats, judging by your description of the way it's running. If you have the means, a couple of pics posted here while you have it apart would probably help some of these guys making sure you're okay.
