I was looking at the miles per hour in the gearing formulas and I think they are a low estimate. I think the stock 23-38 is capable of getting more then 110mph. Well actually it is because I got 114. and geared down I got 116mph. Don't forget guys these are good ice and little snow for lube and its alot more than 2000ft.

the gearing/speed formula's are not 100% correct..i've geared down and hit speeds that wouldn't make any sence on the chart's...i think alot has to do with your clutching/Driver weight/chassis effiecenty as well as the gearing.

yep thats right I agree. alot has to do with the clutching and gearing combined.
The stock gearing on the 00-02 is 13 wide of 23/38 and is a right on the money for a ratio of 1.65 That gear ratio puts out some pretty good MPH on the trail as stock.
The 98-99 sleds had less HP and were over-geared IMO with a 23/37 with big thick 15 wide gears and chains. Thats was alot of gear and rotating mass to pull for 98-99
The 24/40 is a 1.66 ratio I dont even think you could tell the difference on the gun between a 1.65 and 1.66 and the larger gears on top and bottom take up alot of slack and rolling resistance.
If you want to go a little taller for high speed trail riding, especially if you have some motor mods IE port work, big bore, I would suggest a 24/39 which is a 1.62
the biggest part to understand is that a taller gear ratio will put more of a load on the motor so it will work hand and hand with your clutching.

Another thing that eliminates alot of rolling restistance believe it or not is to install 5.38 inch idler wheels in the skid, (all 6 of them). this will also completely eliminate premature hyfax wear up front. The stock ones are only 5.125
Also, buy an offset rear axle and replace the 4 stock 7 inch wheels with 8 inch. You will be faster!!

curious to know the top speed difference from a 15 to 13w gear and chain
I never tried them to see the difference and never will but they look like something that came out of a CK chevy blazer transfer case.
Yamaha got smarter when they went up to a 13 wide HYVO design found on just about all the 2000 and up sleds.

lollllllllllllllllllllllll .for sure they are big ....could be better for reaction not sure on top end
For racing entusiasts, it would make a difference to swap out to 13 wide. Physics dont lie LOL they never have... For top end and trail riding most people wont notice a difference but the 15 wide will rob HP and hurt 0-60 times.

REASON BEHIND THAT 15 WIDE TO 13 WIDE IN 1999 AND 2000 WAS WEIGHT. YAMAHA WAS STARTING TO FIND WAYS TO SHAVE SOME WEIGHT OUT OF THE SRX. BUY 2001, THAT EVEN ADDED THE LITE BRAKE ROTOR AND FLY WHEEL. NOW I GOT TO TELL YA VERY INTRESTING POST HERE. YOU GUYS REALLY HAVE ME THINKING. SEE I AM OLD SCHOOL, DROP TEETH, BETTER E.T., LESS SPEED. I ACTUALLY GEARED UP THIS FALL ON THE GRASS AND MY SRX WAS FASTER. CRAZY !!!!!!!! 3:16 (yammie tony)
Whats the distance in grass you running Tony?
I ran a 19/40 for 500. I had very good results with that ratio in 500. If I ever had a chance to go 660, I would have ran a 20/39.

TOM 500 F.T. !!. I TRYED 19-40, 20-40, 21-40 (felt good) 21-39. NOW IN MY 2002 SRX I HAVE 23-40. !! 3:16 (yammie tony)
Wow, you tried everything LOL
I used 21/39 for 8 tooth drivers in 500ft on a MTN SRX Ended up 1st place in classes 700, 800 and 2nd in 900.
In the 900 class finals, I was dead nuts even with a 900 MTN cat. It was so close we tied, 1 win and 1 loss each so we had to do a 3rd round, Last run ended up so close that I red lighted on the final.

very interesting topic...i've argued with people over speeds which i saw by gearing down my sled..They believed in the Gearing/speed Charts like they were wrote by God himself.
Tony i was thinking about trying 23/40 in my 01 for 660 drags, what lenght chain did you use?

I've been thinking about playing with different gears also.I do alot of drag racing approx. 1000' ft. with a tripple piped viper on snow packed fields.Anyone have any suggestions on gears that would work the best for me to get the lowest E.T. or should i stay stock.
