Change gears quick w/o drain

Is there any problem with laying an SX on its side to change chain gears without draining the case oil? Can this be done quick and efficient? ;)!
 
Why would you not just change the chain case oil? On its side or not you pop that cover and it's going all over. Not to mention the mess your going to have to work in. Actually not draining it will make a bigger mess. I would think your gonna get it all over the brake pads and rotor. I don't think your gonna like that to much. My .02
 
Used to do this all the time with SkiDoo's. No drain plug on them anyway, so it was the best way to change the oil.

I personally would drain the oil, even if I was going to put the old oil back in it. I have done this when I had just put new oil in it and wanted to make a change. Just clean the inside of the tunnel real well before draining.
 
:dunno: If you're out testing different gears, don't really want to be going thru tons of oil, not to mention time/mess/cleanup. Talked to others who pop that cover off trailside to change without spilling a drop. :dunno: seems a quicker/easier/cleaner way to go if your oil is good.
 
My concern would be that sometimes when a sled is on its side, fuel will flow out the overflow lines. I had to remove my bellypan foam because it was soaked with gas from doing that. Not sure which way the problem occurs, but somebody will be able to help.
 
I changed gears in my sled last night by just tipping it on its side. I put fresh oil in a few days ago and didn't really want to go out and buy more. I didn't make a mess. Just take it easy and watch what you're doing. I propped my hood up once it was opened, just to make sure I didn't bind the hinges.

If your tank is full and you tip it on the right side, gas can siphon out.
 
just drain and change the oil. its not worth the risk of spilling gas and not to mention flooding the carbs. the chain case only holds like 8 oz anyway.
 
I used to do this all the time on my SX's...works very well. Go ahead and do it if the oil is fresh.
 
Thanks. I thought it could be done. This time Im going to drain n change (been a year), but if I don't like the gear, will tip to revert. What do you guys do with old gear oil?
 
I put it in the 5 gallon used oil container I keep around for vehicle oil changes and then take it to Murray's, Autozone, Napa or some municipalities take used oil as well.
