Hey all,ive got a 97 sx700 bought this year from a friend. It has always run great.Since i bought it,the only thing ive done is add 168 studs.I also put a new spring (stock) in the secondary, and cleaned the clutch surfaces.I took it out on the lake today and after 3 or 4 long high speed runs i heard a pop.I thought it was the snap on my coat hitting my helmet so i got on it again and the belt blew.I put on the spare rode easy for a bit, then got on it again.Same thing,"pop".Bolth times it was at pretty high speed. The top part of bolth belts came off,i hope the pics work.what would cause this?I dont have alignment tools yet but this was never a problem before.I dont know if the belts were dry rotted or what.Any ideas? thanks Al

wow....you have some heat problems in your clutch..alignment maybe off or your clutching is just not efficiant....are these yamaha stock belts.

check alignment. Are they aftermarket belts or OEM.When I used an aftermarket belt once(only once)..it blew to pieces doing damage to footwell and tore up my speedo cable.Cost me a few bucks.I know my alignment was out.I purchased an alignment/offset tool and found this out after.Since then use onlt OEM belts and check my clutches every summer for this issue.
Somethings not right there.... investigate it!!

you have some heat problems going on ; the cord is being pulled out releasing the top cog ,check the following
1- alignement , center to center or offset
2-clutch component worn out no efficiency bushings , springs , etc..

Yep^^^^ check alignment and only use yami belts....found that out the hard way also!!!! When you put the other belt on were the clutches hot??????Where are they running at rpm wise? How about belt deflection did they squeal?

I have never had any issues running non factory belts on other brands of sleds. since this is my first yamaha, I can't say much becasue I happen to use a stock yamaha belt on my venture. It did have a gates on it when I picked it up, and it worked fine.
FWIW, gates/ dayco supplied belts to the other 3 sled makers, while it looks like yokohama made the stock yami belts.
That said, a belt is a belt, provided those were belts not rated for the hp of your sled. To me it looks like you have other issues. Even if they were old and dry rotted, I would be amazed if that was why both belts did the same thing.

The clutches didnt seem hot,but i didnt really look for it.Bolth belts were yamaha. What I dont get is nothing changed from last year. When I changed the spring, everything went back in the way it came out.As far as rpm,it engaged at about 3800 and seemed to shift fine ran up to a little under 9000.I just talked to the po and he never had belt issues.Oh yeah, when the 1st belt completly blew it took out my speedo cable

There is a little play on the shaft.I cant help but think I did something wrong when I changed the secondary spring.I put the spring at 3&3 and turned(tightned)the helix to the next bolt holes which was about 60deg.What could I have screwed up?I might try to get a new belt and putt around to see if the clutches are getting hot. aarg

i suspect you definetly have a clutching issue , 9000 rpm would indicate that maybe the belt is slipping on the primary , good place to start
check the secondary spring , make sure its seated in its proper location and check the secondary bushings on the sheaves and the the bushing on the helix . check the black buttons aswell ?

Agreed, 9000 is too high. My SX runs right at 8400.

so what would cause it to slip?I cleaned the shive surfaces with a 3m pad and wiped them down with gas on a rag(didnt have acetone). The sled has 3200 mi,should I change the primary spring?
you dont wanna use gas to clean your clutches.!.. take em off and wash em up with hot, hot soapy water!!! then scuff em up real good. also make sure your jackshaft bearings are good, and your jackshaft is not wore..I had a problem with my sx ..the jackshaft wore inside the bearing and i started blowing belts exactly like you are. check that out!

I went out and took the secondary off again to check things out.I had it wraped right,3&3.Then I compaired the new spring with the old one.The old spring is almost 1/4" longer than the new.Is that right?I would think an old wore out spring would be shorter than a new replacment.I really appreciate everyones input,I absoultely hate having anyone work on my stuff so its nice to have a place to go when in a bind, thanks again Al

You did clean the sheaves properly, correct? Gas is a petroleum product and shouldn't be used for this application. The soap and water along with a scuffing from a fine grit sand paper should be performed.
If the belt slips, it can easily rev to 9k, which is not good.

I'd put the old spring back in. Then with belt removed and the parking brake on, move the secondary moveable sheave through it's full range of motion by hand to see/feel if it moving/sliding freely. Also ensure you have the proper "float" for the secondary on the jack shaft.

ok,I got some new belts,re-cleaned everything, and put the old spring back in.I took it out for a ride to heat the belt up then let it cool.On the 2nd ride I let things warm up and then made a long high speed run.I checked the clutches,I could keep my hand on them for about 5 sec.Its hard to tell if things are ok because we just go 6"of new powder. One last thing, still revs to 9000 kinda makes me nervous
