Went out for a little ride yesterday, got about 2 miles down the trail, thought I fouled a plug. So I pulled over a heard a slight knocking sound, I'm thinking GREAT... Pulled the plugs, burned up the center cyl. Took me by surprise, as I wasn't even leaning on it too much. Got on it for a hundred yards or so, let off and coasted for a few seconds, went to get back on it, that's when I thought I had fouled a plug and pulled over a shut it down. Sled was warmed up as always for at least 7-8 min before I left. I always take it real easy for the first little bit, I have to go through town a bit to get on the trails anyways. So by the time I got on it (throttle wise) sled had been running for 12-13 min I would figure.
So should I do a complete rebuild on what I got, or should I part it out and buy a used motor? I figure a complete rebuild will cost as much if not more than just buying a running motor already with 2-3K on it, if the rebuild is done properly, not a band-aid job.
What do you all think?
Thanks for you opinions.

rebuild your engine!
I would rebuild your engine. It might cost you more money then buying a used engine, but at least you know it will last you for three or more seasons to come. Used engines, you have no idea if it has been sitting around for extended periods of time, had previous problems etc. Just make sure you know why it went down, so you won't have the same problem when you rebuild it.

Define a "good used" motor? What makes you think a used motor won't have some problems that will bite you later?? If it just needs a piston and rings, then rebuilding the top end will not cost too much. Besides, you will have an engime that you know the history of. Before you rebuild it, you'll need to find out the source of the problem.
Well, You know exactly how many miles are on your sled and how it was/is treated. You won't know that with a "good used" motor... and sometimes people arn't so honest.
The motor will have to come out to wash the debris out the cases/bearings, and you only really need to buy 1 piston and maybe a set of rings(if you can't get them off of the old piston and or don't reeeaaaallllly want to put new rings in it).- but since the motor is out why not install new rings on all 3 of the pistons, just to freshen 'er up??? Plus you'll need to buy base gaskets. You'll need to find out and know why the ctr cylinder burned down... Dirty carbs, ice in the jet???
On a another note have the powervalves been cleaned lately-If not its just one more process to add to the list of things to do... when you get done she'll be like brand new. T

open it up and inspect then add parts up and toss it around witch way is
best.
but you need to find out why this happend,so it don't happen again,,a 100 yrds is a long way if you where lean??

Def. Rebuild it yourself. End of story. You'll be a lot happier in the end. Good luck! Tear the center cylinder off an d post some pics so people can start diagnosing your problem.
I agree with the rest of the guys on rebuilding it. This way you can inspect everything and you know it will last a long time. Other motors is kind of a toss up and like someone said they dont all tell the truth. I have to let you know that I like taking things apart and making them work better so Im kind of biased. Good luck to you. Hope you get on the trails soon what ever your decision is.

Yeah...that is the way I was leaning anyways. I'll probably just rebuild the entire motor so I basically have a brand new powerplant. I have no idea what caused it to blow. I had the carb heat on, and it was 22 degrees out when I left. I cleaned the carbs 400 miles ago when i got it out. So anyways, keep the opinions coming.
When you take it apart you should take some pics and post them so some of the guys can tell you what happened. I have heard of the center going in other machines but Im not sure of the problem. I would also like to see what it looks like when that happens. Cheers

I'll try to get some pics up this weekend some time
I'd bet it had the lean burn down blues coming back down off of the mains. My viper with pipes showed the hottest temps then. I had to raise the needles to the highest setting to avoid it. Maxdlx

yep open it up check it out then decide! But you are going to want to make sure you got the problem or it is going to get expensive

I'm thinking it was just it's time, only 5700 miles on it though. Kinda pisses me off. My 97 V-Max 700 had almost 12000 on it, ran like brand new....go figure...
