Went up north this week and rode the ole 01 SRX 700. Ran great. BUT ... every now and then it would act as if TORS was activated. Sometimes I'd be haulin' into a corner and as soon as I touch the brake the power would drop out from underneath me. I'd glide to the side and investigate. Sled would idle but any attempt to bring RPMs up higher resulted in what I would describe as an ignition bog; it just wouldn't go. It would make this sound like Bow-Bow-Bow-Bow and never get over 3000 RPM. So I start checking it out.

Years ago I had installed an electric shield. Had no problems. But like last year something happened to the cord - it shorted or something such that any time the cord was plugged in the machine would Bow-Bow-Bow-Bow and never get over 3000 RPM. Unplugging the bad cord would fix it. So I threw that cord away and got another. Obviously a short in the cord was causing this problem

So the first thing I did when it start acting up again was to unplug my shield. No luck. Didn't make a diff. So I opened the hood to expose the ignition and the helmet-heater splice. Simply squeezing and moving the wires fixed it! Woohoo!. Off I go. Ten minutes later same thing. So I screw around with the wires and after a few minutes it's working again. Off I go. This is getting old. Five or ten minutes later same thing. JEEEZZZ!. So I found the fastest way to fix it. As soon as it would act up I'd just hit the kill switch. Engine dies. Turn on kill switch, half a pull. ZOOOM! Off I go until the next time it bogs out. Turn off kill sw, etc.

So, it seems that there is an electrical problem near the ignition.

Last year my 01 would, every now and then, send a helluva jolt of electrons through the handlebars and I would get a poke with my gloves on. That would happen ONLY when I'd hit big bumps. No pokes now, just bow-bow.

Now comes the screwy part. My buddy has a 98 SRX 700 that exhibits the exact same problem. We suspected TORS, disconnected it. No diff. We've bought a used CDI box, swapped out, no diff. We've tried different coils, plugs, etc. We've beat our heads against the wall and CANNOT figure out why this 98 acts like TORS is activated. I thought it was a unique thing and then WHAMMO. Mine starts to exhibit the same behavior.

I don't know enough about the CDI box, but a theory came to my brain ... What if there is a momentary short on the 01 that flips a switch in the CDI box telling it to cut the spark? This theory would hold water for the 98 also, but the 98 must have a constant short because it always flakes out. Then for the 01, just cutting the power and "rebooting" the CDI box clears the problem until it shorts again. Just a theory ...

Now C'MON. I cant have the only 2 SRXs that display this problem. SOMEBODY else had to have had this problem.

And someone should know something about the behavior of the CDI box and what happens if an electrical short is detected.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

my 01 was doin that and turns out one of the wires for the tors was rubbed thru but minne would do it pretty much all the time

And would yours do it even if you had bypassed TORS by plugging the two wires together? Thanks Jordan

Tore into the 98 first. We've checked this sled multiple times before for suspected wiring problems. Son of a B&%$*. Near the brake system we found 4 wires that had worn through. cut, soldered, shrinktubed them and now THE 98 RUNS !!!!!! It's been down for 2 years now cause we couldn't figure out what the **** was wrong with it. As soon as it warms up a bit I'll look in the same place on the 01. I'll bet $$$$ !!

Lost the bet. Looked at the 01, no rub through. In fact I had pulled the motor 2 years ago and used plastic conduit on the wiring harness under the engine. So the 01 does not have exactly the same problem BUT I SUSPECT that it is still a wiring issue.

SO ...

Everybody ring in on where they think I should be looking for worn wires.
Please!

Thanks all.

check for rubbing down on cdi .. or check the loop at the top of the sterring post for broken wired if u fixe and think under engine is ok

this was the exact problem my last 00 srx had that caused me to get rid of, of course i didn't know about this site then or i'd of kept it, it was in twice the condition of the one I have now, oh well

Other than the harness, check the wiring going under the tank and seat to the brake/tail light. Also as mentioned, check the wiring in left foot well, UNDER the cdi, have to lift the cdi up to check underneath. Shorts can be a PIA to find, but free (just your time) to check/repair. These are some of the common spots for rubs that I've read on here, but since messing with the wiring by your ignition seemed to un-ground it for a while, that's the first place I would go over with a fine tooth comb.
