i can't comment more then i have, which is based on what i have learned from an excellent viper mechanic over the short time i have had mine. He says some intermittent hanging should be fine. I still have to look at my plugs, he said best way to check is go wide open throttle for a short bit and shut it down imeediately on the trail and check it then before idling. He also suggests running my viper with pre-mix in the tank at between 50-100:1. They run very lean at low speeds, when the throttle is cracked they get lots of oil, but not at the first half of the throttle.

My Viper and my sons vipers both hang at 4000 sometimes they come right down to 1800 and sometimes they stay there for 10 or seconds then come down. Every once and a will I will have to hit the throttle to get it to come down?????

whats the best way of knowing if your running too lean? Checking the plugs?
Probably a good idea to check this before adjusting the idle???

RRL,
just wondering because the viper motor is variable compression. Not sure if thats the case with the SRX. When a viper motor goes, a common thing to do is mill the heads to even up the compression.

Jordan, can you cover the holes back up you put in your air box or how did you open it up some. I tried that mod, and the jetting nightmares were endless. It never ran right until i went back to stock air box. Maxdlx

i didnt put any holes in airbox previous owner did it all and yeah i can cover them back up but the dividers inside the box are also gone i just noticed that today i would like to take it back to stock if i could find a stock airbox

im fairly confident that i need to adjust the fuel screw however i heard that not having those dividers in the airbox can cause it to run leaner in one cylinder versus another anyone experience this

go and purchase a new complete airbox. They are cheap to buy and you will sleep at night.Problem with that SOLVED !!!!!Real simple. Then start to get that sled back to stock specs and see how you like it.

I have a trail ported (no pipes) viper that has a 4000 idle hang for at least 20 seconds. I am at 47.5 pilots, 2 turns out, 160 mains. It is worse than last year since I have heel clickers now. I did all my my plug readings(nice dark brown I like to be safe) last year and rode in all type of high stress conditions with no problems. Can the heel clickers realy change things to the point that the engine damage is possible. It runs great the way it is.

BornYamaha, you need to kick out your fuel screws to 2-1/4 or 2-3/8. i can't believe you need 160 mains on a ported non piped viper, or even 47.5 pilots.
dave carpenter, put your fuel screws to 1-3/8 or 1-1/2 turns.
maxdlx, what jetting troubles were you experiencing w/your drilled air box? did you notice that the jetting changed on every little change in temp? or just too fussy to dial it in just right? did you remove the "shelf" inside the box too?
jordan, the '00-'02 srx's didn't have the dividers in the air box, in stock form. that's why yours doesn't have them. if you just have holes/slots, drilled in the top of the airbox, underneath the filter, you can just use duck tape to seal that off and get your jetting back to stock. also, you need to get ahold of some smaller mains.
.....i just thought of this, you guys with hanging idles, were your carbs cleaned at the beginning of this year? maybe your pilots/pilot circuits are a little dirty and you might be chasing your tail w/the fuel screws/pilot jet changes. i would clean the pilot jets/pilot circuit first.
