I found a guy that works at a yamie dealership.. hes going to work on it on his own time..hes my fathers friend so im getting parts at cost n all.. so im happy about that.. im seeing the guy tonite so well see what he says about it.. at the same time im gona try n get him to get my wirring re routed or atleast fixed up and put in a tube to prevent the rubthrough plus replace all the slides n such on the carb and mayb the boots.... this thing is going for a full rebuild.. im not messing around im tired of crap breaking on me.. n if it does again.. well jebus.. i dont even know what to say to that..
I DEFINATELY DID buy somes headaches... sucks though cause i did the compression test and everything and it was good.. was measurin 120+ on each cylender..
im def gona pm yamerdown... thanks for the referance crewchief

Anytime you buy a used sled you need to take the carbs off and see what jetting it has. I do this even if the previous owner claims to know what's in it. Don't take anything for granted. Then do LOTS of plug checks to verify it looks good in all three ranges, whether the jetting checks out close or you end up re-jetting it. I read a previous post that you said it's all stock, but then in another post I thought you said the air box had a bunch of holes drilled in it? Huge warning flag that it has been messed with. I'm wondering if he drilled the air box, never really ran it much/not at all, and then sold it to you. More air = leaner = burn down. It had to have been pretty lean to take out all the cylinders. I'm really bummed for you, I know buying a "new to you" sled and then having this happen is a tough pill to swallow. At least your on the right track now, your dad's buddy should know what he's doing. Wish you a speedy return to riding.

Yea... well me nor did my dad kno much about sleds... when we bought it the clutch has a massive crack in it.. n didnt notice.. we didnt really know what to look 4 exept the hyfaxs and hear it run and such...
I was kinda noticing things that where changed as i took some of it apart... I brought it in this evening and the guy seems to some of his stuff.. he just got into a massive bike wreck in the summer so hes going through therapy.. so he wont be as quick to work on it but my dad swears by him.. since hes rebuilt a few things of my dads friends toys n they havent had any problems since.. he gets the job done right and dont take no short cuts and makes sure its 100% before giving it back...
I already requested if he could find me a used stock yamie clutch, stock can, changing jetting specs to the 01 srx, fix up all wiring make sure theres no rub throughs... and its going to be a full rebuild replacing EVERYTHING wether it needs it or not.. its going to be exepensive but im gona get the job done right and not worry once its done...
for the airbox im gona cover the holes with silicone and at same time make sure nothin else got butchard.. though the holes where already coverd..but i guys ill cover em better to make 100% sure they ent leakin in air...
Im hoping ill have her back within a month... doesnt give me a whole pile of time to ride but still god a quarter of the season left.. better than nothing...
I made it clear i wanted to turn everything back to stock...if anything has been changed.. so ill know exacly whats in it... no more guessing

Well i might be in luck!!!....
Friends cousin has a srx 700 sitting in the garage.. he totalled the frame a few years ago n wanted to buy another frame for it but never got around to it... so he wants to just get rid of it and is willing to let it go to me for about 5-600 bucks.. engine is supposed to work.. has around 4500 km's on it from what he remebers and everything is in decent shape minus frame.. comes with everything minus the exhaust for it...
Figured its an AWSOME deal.. even if the engine didnt turn out to what i hope for it i still get everythin else as extra parts... plastics supposed to be in exelent shape.. and they are black..
Now the question is.. was there a specific year for makin the black srx's or is it just an option you have when purchased new... I wouldnt be as interested if it was an 98 or 99 since most parts are slightly changed from 98 99 to 00 and up... and wouldnt be able to use as much of the parts as i was planning on to...
If engine is in good condition perfect.. ill have 2 engines for her... mayb slowly build up the crap out of the spare one and go to the drags with er one day...
If everything goes as planned ill find out tomorrow if I do get to keep er or not...
Leme kno what u guys think

the sleds with the black belly pans were 98 only..it wasnt an option..so the engine is different but it will work if you get another stator & put in the the 98 engine..

hmm what i was scared of...
im buying the whole thing for 5-600 bucks... so id have everything needed to change er to the 98...
but im kinda worried about the crank. i dont want to spend the money on getting the engine running/tuned up and all.. it has been sitting for over 5years so it will be needing some maintanence... though it would be nice to get for extra parts.. n prob could sell the parts that i dont need n get mosto f the money back..

i say buy it..but i wouldnt change your sled over to the 98 wiring etc..that would be a downgrade..you would lose the dual headlight & the newer motors were faster..
Detonation...too low octane. If pistons are erroded on the front side edge (exhaust ports) you were using poor quality fuel. If the top of pistons are hammerd out your lean.

Hey turk...thanks ill look into it and see whats what with the pistons...
And for the parts sled... its not going to happen.. he wanted 500 for the whole engine set up.. been sitting for 5 years.. and its from a srx 600... so not gona bother....
Now.. does the srx600 use the same clutch????? if so.. id wana buy it..

Pretty sure they use the same clutch but they are calibrated different. You'd have to put the proper weights springs etc for a 700 in that clutch.

alrite guys... talked to the mech workin on my sled last nite.. all i got to say is OUCH... a full rebuild is gona cost me alot more than i though...
ok well here are some more new things that i found out....
Jetting... completely wrong jets...
air box tube was kinked preventing alot of air to go through...
So diff jetting... and kinked air box tube was the culprite in the blowing off the engine 100%
now i need all 3 new sleeves pistons and one new header... and im getting a new crank...
total approx cost to completely rebuild sled is now 4500$
personally i think that is a nice kick to the nuts

There is no way I would spend $4500 for an engine rebuild...thats WAY MORE THAN THE SLED IS WORTH...even with a new engine.... Someone is getting the shaft.
I'd put another $500 with the $4500 for the engine and buy me a much newer sled.

I can't say without seeing the parts, but i think you are getting screwed by your mechanic. I know he is a friend of your father (or something like that), but stuff like the crank and cyl can usually be rebuilt. If they are beyond that, source some used stuff on here and put it back together. Again, without seeing the parts it's hard to say, but anything I'd be suprised if it couldn't be fixed for $1500-$2000.

yea... thats what im thinking on... the 4500 is the MAX it is going to cost me.. this is not an exact estimate just yet...
a brand new crank is 1700 so that hurts right there...
only bad thing is... i dont want to have a dead sled sitting around my yard... i could sell it for parts i guess n all... just very depressing... just bought the damn thing...
I will kno exacly what im doing with er tonite.. going to see the guy to see what i can do... if i do rebuild this sled... its to keep for good...
If i do get rid of it... im not gona want to buy another used sled.... but im gona want to buy a new one... which is like 10-15k

Call these guys, they will rebuild your old crank for a lot less then that. Excellent work too.

Get a used motor for $1200.00 and be done. You can get 3 cylinders and a crank rebuilt for about $1500.00 plus $300 for pistons and rings. Thats $1800 in parts. Labour $850.00 for a total of $2350.00. Or part the sled out and hopefully make $1800.00 back.
