I've got a 97 VMax 600 XTC with about 3500 miles. I bought it used and it ran good when I got it. This year I decided to go thru the carbs. I've lots of experience with carbs. So I went through them, found nothing bad, put them back together.

Took the machine out for a ride and only one cyl is hitting. Turning the choke on would momentarily get the other one firing. I figured I made a mistake in the carb and tore them down again. Again, they seemed to be fine and I put it back together. Ran it around a little bit. It seems better, but still ... idle and part throttle seem to run on only one. Full throttle and/or when the RPMs get up around 5k kicks in the other cyl and then it runs like hell to about 95 mph. I don't believe I have a blown cyl cause I dont' think it would do 95. It really seems like a fuel issue but the carbs seem ok.

The carbs are both working and properly synced

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks. :2strokes:

how are the plugs looking both burning correctly? My 97 mm 600 was doing the same thing first time out this season and i heard a bang and it came out of it. I had a new motor that i built this fall to put in it so I changed it out when I took the old motor out I had a motor mount that the bolt had fallen out and the other bolt came loose not sure if the clutch was causing the problem. Rode today 103 miles for the first time this season runs like a top. Does your 600 have smart carb? If it does is their any codes?

Tiny Air leak in the gas line? or boots? I would think the boots would pull more air at high speed but maybe a gas line doesn't leak that much when its flowing faster.

Both plugs are a nice medium tan color after the second rebuild. So their both burning OK when they burn. If it were a leak in the air line I would expect the opposite results as I experienced many years ago in a car with a slit in the fuel line. Runs great except when you jump out to pass a car on a two-lane road with an oncoming semi. As soon as you drop the hammer to beat the truck the power falls off. I think that was my first gray hair. BARELY beat the semi. But the story holds true. A slit or break in the line would result in part-throttle working fine but full throttle falling off as the air would be sucked in.

BYW what is that big black plastic thing that appears to equalize pressure between the carbs?

What is a smart carb? I have a 97. It looks pretty short on IQ.

Just a thing to check - If you have the spark plugs with the screw on top nipple make sure it is tight. I had one cylinder that wasn't firing all the time on my SRX and I found out the spark plug top had loosened. NGK now makes them with the solid tops, but there are still some screw on tops still out there.

the black thing on the intake boots between the carbs is called a boost bottle. Smart carb automatically adjust the jetting of the carbs for altitude, temp, barometric pressure, Does your sled have 2 black boxes mounted on the right side of the airbox if it does it has smart carb also carbs have 2 solenoids on each carb and lots of wires

carbs

not saying u did'nt clean the carbs good but i had a similar problem on a 500 vmax. did you pull the screen out where the needle and seat are. u have to take the floats off and remove the small screw holding them in. mine was all gummed up with junk. cleaned it out problem solved.

The model of 600 jvizz has does not have smart carbs.

Those were only on venture 600's and MM 600s.

How is your oil consumption? Seeing it is a 97 600, if you go through a lot of oil and it smokes a lot, you may have a bad oil pump......

Our 97 venture 600 had the original bad design one on, and it was dumping oil in. It's all good since that was replaced.
