What is the normal &, or safe amount of oil that will be used on a 98 XTC 500 Deluxe, Stock. Ours has been in the family since new and has always been dependable but it also seems like it goes through more oil than most of the other sleds. About twice as much as my 03 Viper. As far as that goes it burns more gas too (7 - 9 MPG) I know the mpg makes it naturally burn more oil but it still seems excessive. I don't wan't to turn it down to much if it will be risking the engine. BTW it is not being riden hard. It is my teenage daughters sled. It has always been this way.

Ok first off check oil pump setting,,to do that with engine off hold throttle
wide open and look down at the pump and see if alignment marks are lined up.

About 100 miles per quart should be the maximum usage.

BornYamaha, your viper will use less oil, cause yamaha has them set leaner in stock form than the earlier twins and triples. if i was you, i would set the oil pump cable free play on your viper, to .625"-.700". also, i would leave the oil pump adjustment on your daughters 500 alone. better for the engine to use a little more oil than have it go "squeek". also, my old 600 xtc twin, would get like 12-13 mpg, pretty easily. maybe your daughter is just too hard on the go-go flipper?.....LOL.

12 to 13 mpg????? wow my well tuned XTC on a good day is 11ish hard to believe that one, them twins just didn't get the mileage no way...mopar1rules said:also, i would leave the oil pump adjustment on your daughters 500 alone. better for the engine to use a little more oil than have it go "squeek". also, my old 600 xtc twin, would get like 12-13 mpg, pretty easily. maybe your daughter is just too hard on the go-go flipper?.....LOL.
and he can lean back oil on the 500,,i have my DLX and XTC cut back
to 40:1-45:1ish after lots of tuning the oil pumps, they don't need that
much oil to survive, they were well built.
he's probably more like 20:1...too much

Daman, do you know who your speaking to? Your speaking to the tuner of all tuners, Id hate to see TY lose another great member/tuner like yourself due to calling out a "WELL KNOWLEDGE" tuner like Mopar.

Expert, don't even try to start anything. you really like to stir the pot, don't you? every sled is different. at the pump, this xtc is always putting in less fuel, than everyone else.

Expert, also clutching plays a role in fuel mileage too, and this sled has clutch work done to it. i'm sure part of the good mileage, has something to do w/that.

Wow, where did that come from.
Daman not only doesn't agree with Mopar, but says there is no way Mopar was getting that kind of MPG. "No way", can't happen.
Being sceptical is one thing, basically calling someone a liar because your experiences don't match is another.
Seems a bit arrogant to me unless Daman was at the pump with Mopar when fueling up.
Let's have a beer Summit!
Let it snow...

The couple 5 and 6 twins I tuned all took a 1 size drop in mains and needle clip. MPG vastly improved. 1 qt oil to a tank of gas is a great measure to go by, as mpg is affected by a lot of factors that do not include jetting. Best example: Riding my sx with my dad I could get 15 mpg, and doing the riding I like I get 5 mpg. Also you can lean the pump past the factory mark to get less oil usage if needed.
