WHY so many Yamaha Motors blowing up lately ???

Seems like every couple of hours someone comes on here saying that they just blew up their motor in their Viper or SRX.Is there a lessen to be learned here maybe.Leave your motor stock ,don't start making changes with jetting and the such and put yourself on the edge.From the factory aren't the triples supposed to be the most reliable motors..bulletproof. Lately a lot of them have been shot down.There has been a lot of talk about lean idle to,seems to be worse this season.I don't know what to make of it..will I be next..now I am nervous.
 
Its all in what people do to their motors/equipment. If you run them when you should have a rebuild, If you dont do your maintence, dont clean carbs, Dont know what your doing when it comes to jetting or other mods one might do....Its all a handful of things.. Then people wonder why the engine siezed or wont run..
Most times its neglect, and not enough knowledge on how it works that cause's problems.
 
yep, lack of maintanence, lack of proper oil pump cable adjustment, and lack of knowledge on carb tuning for the mods, will = "boom". that's what's going on here the motors are still strong....look at how long their yamaha triples ran, on them running lean jetting and dirty carbs. any other brand, probably wouldn't last 10-20 miles.
 
I agree with DV8 and mopar..lack of maintenance,keeping an eye on jetting/wash and the unwilling to use proper octane fuel,we see this every season start.
 
daman..how come back in the old days of the 440's like 78-81 years a lot of sleds were just driven and driven year after year.There really wasn't such a thing of carb cleaning and proper storage.I for one was one of them.My 78 Exciter 440 would go and go.We never did a thing to them.No fogging,no carb cleaning,no jetting changes,no clutch work.Just pu from the dealer and rode them and rode them year after year.My 440 had 5000 miles on it and still ran strong. I just traded it in for another new sled and did the same all over again. Now a days it is different.I guess running a 4-stroke with fuel injection is the way to go.
 
i hear ya my old massy ferguson and suzuki's never had carb problems just
lots of other problems lol,i think the carbs of today are allot more sophisticated then that of yesteryear..
 
It has to do with a LOT of modification companies making stuff that makes MORE HORSEPOWER.. More horsepower = more broken stuff.. Thats the way it is.. If you push a part to do 110% of what it was designed to do,,, BANG!!!!
 
Yes! In those days your 440 was putting out 50 HP max. My 309 Kohler was 20HP!!

Oh and carbs sucked (Tillestons: needle and seat stuck if you didn't ride them everyday), clutching was pitiful etc. etc. Oh and you needed to take at least six plugs with you (for a single banger).

I wouldn't want to go back!! My two cents.
 
we had good gas that had a long shelf life. that is why you got away with just driving them year after year. as you know gas quality is in the sh*%er now!cant get away with 3 months on premium now!
 
well you can add kirkswims viper to the list of kia vipers. took down mag side connecting rod crank bearing on this week ends ty ride. other than some chassis/clutching mods, it is bone stock. will post some pics in my milage thread on 4 stroke side. has always run synthetic oil and oil pump was run at factory settings.

Yes, the motors' that are "modded" & run the ragged edge..ya expect that.

Been there done that...quit that stuff 10 plus years ago...screwed with reliability for a few extra HP...DUH!!! :o|

But now, ya can be running stock..be right where it ought to be or even on the conservative side..& still lose one. Been there done that too!! :o|

Fuel quality all across the board is WAY DOWN.

Talk to any mechanic who is inside ANY motor today, from the small ones on up. They will tell you there are problems out there due to fuel.

Kind of like playing russian roulette these days!!

Couldn't agree more. We have over 11,000 kms on my 2001 SRX all TROUBLE FREE miles. Use genuine Yamaha parts and belts.
Do your proper maintenance and if you don't know how.... PAY to get it done right. We run it hard and fast all day long,these triples are truly bullet proof. Unfortunately they are not idiot proof. :2strokes: :2strokes:
 
As said before we see this at the beginning of every season. I agree that fuel quality is going down. I'm one of the ones modding my sled (not really pushing to the extreme edge by no means), and did do a rebuild last year. It's hard not getting mad when a sled burns down, but I've learned a lot on my own because of stuff breaking down. I'm not sorry when I break something, I just think of it as an experience to learn from.
 
bad gas has to top the list. most aftermarket parts made for our sleds arent new tech, red head came out in 97 srx shortly after as with the viper. when these sleds came out most people would clean their carbs out as a safety measure, now people get their carbs cleaned becouse the sled wont run or run poorly at the begining of the season. I do a little sled work on the side, in the past two years the number of people calling me to clean carbs because the sled wont start is crazy. bad gas+ mods designed to run on the older better gas= a big fat kick to the b##$s for 2 strokes.

so is our premium gas of today equal to regular gas of yesturyear. How come most of us have to use premium fuel in our sleds when my buddy and his doo buddies all get to use regular.Went riding with 5 doos one night all cross country thru the trails.When it came to filling up with gas..they use regular.The pumps out there didn't have premium..so I didn't fill up.Then at about midnight as we where heading home I was getting low.Had at least 20-25 km's to go home.My bud says..we have to head to the main Hwy and you can get gas because I ain't pulling you home.I thought I could make it home..but decided to take his word.
 
i run regular in my sled but i checked my plugs yester day they were whit so its running lean should i leave it the way it is?
