My sons 95 vmax 600 has a mid-range bog/sputter. It starts and idles fine. Runs great at full throttle, but between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle it sputters badly. I've cleaned the carburetor and adjusted the air screws in and out with no results. The plugs are tan after running at full speed (90mph) but are black and wet otherwise. I have not replaced or adjusted the jet needle - I believe it's at the factory setting.
Any ideas?
Oh yea, gas milage is about 6mpg.

I've been struggling with this too with my 96 600, after a new clutch and some carb adjustments it does not bog as bad, but still gets horrible gas mileage (you may see my other post today).
The first time i was stuck behind someone going 15 mph on a trail was a miserable experience.I kept looking down expecting to see gas pouring out the exhaust.
My 95 500 runs like a top, gets 10-11mpg, and has great throttle response from 5mph to 75 mph. I just don't get it. It blows away the 600 until you hit 60mph. If only it had the xt suspension (and yes, I've considered swapping)

using old plugs not new...
Do this,hold the throttle in that area for say 1/4 mile, kill the engine wile still holding throttle position pull plugs and inspect,dark black,white, what color you seeing???
we can help then...your probably rich in mid range..

Also, you may need to check your float level/ needles and seat. If the height is not correct it will continue dumping fuel into the bowl, === way rich/ Bad mileage..
There is instructions on how to do this on the tech page / and stock specs in there also.

I replaced both float needles and adjusted the floats when I cleaned the carbs. I'm ready to drop the main needle a notch to get lean again, but I'm wondering why? What changed? Can the jet needle wear out?

Sputter
The sputter is the needle on the slide you have to drop that needle probably one notch, had a '94 600 exactly the same thing couldn't drive under half throttle or it would sputter and load up, dropped the needle one notch and ran like a different sled. Check your plug colour after doing it and make sure it is correct.
