97 500 XT oil pump

My 97 500 XT is getting close to 15 000 km's now and i am just wondering if this engine has an updated oil pump available like the 600 twin. Would it be wise to replace it with this many km's? Should i also be looking into a top end rebuild?

yep, there is. I know when I look up the microfiche for my 600 97 venture's oil pump, it shows an updated part number for the 500 venture as well.

If you can't find the part # I will gladly look it up for you.

I just had to buy the latter one for my venture 60o. It really made a HUGE difference on how it ran.

fwiw, Port yamaha has 16% off the price here for internet orders.....

And 15,000 km's = 9320 miles. According to some here, that xt is just getting broken in LOL


I only have 6000 miles on my 97 venture, that's 9656 km to you
If you want a quick engine health indicator, get a compression reading for each cylinder. If you want a really good indicator of engine health, use a leakdown tester for the cylinders.....

It uses a tonne of oil. It goes about 300 km before the oil light comes on.

I also tested compression at the beginning of this season and both cylinders were equal at 120 psi so i'm sure it will be fine the rest of the season. Other than high oil consumption this sled runs great, fast too.

Ok try these things and maybe it'll help;


1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)

2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is here )

3rd- set oil pump,,with engine off hold throttle wide open and look down
at the oil pump make sure alinment marks are lined up,OR just before
lining up(2mm)(for less oil),your adjustment for the oil cable is here in this adjusting joint,pull back rubber sheave's and 1# is the lock nut 2# is your adjusting ring,turn 2# in or out when set lock nut 1# then replace rubber sheave's half's

4th-then set choke free play so you have at least 1.5mm of play in the
cable,that is measured similar to the oil cable,find the joint for the choke
and pull the outer tube of the cable up and measure the gap..

play with your pump backing if off a little more each time,oil amount should
decrees,,if not your pump is bad,you'll need new or good used..

Try this first, but don't be suprised if you need a new oil pump.

Ours used as much oil as yours it sounds, and it was the pump. Now if you buy used, make sure it is from a 98+ 500. Don't get one from a 97 unless you can verify the part number is the updated one, and not the original number.....


Now throw this all out the window if your oil pump has been replaced with the new design already. Please verify what pump you have in there first.....
