Suggestions and/or help for building a mtn sled

A buddy of mine "Champstar2121" are going to build a mountain monster out of his 2003 vmax trail performance 600 triple. We need help with suggestions on what to do to mod this sled. He will still trail it on occasion so we might go with a 144" track but we need a good suspension for that....Ideas? We need to get more horse power out of that 600, clutching,gearing. we are thinking powder hound ski's? a good tunnel extension? probably new running boards with some traction!?
What do you guys think or suggest? Throw your ideas at us!

A friend of mine in Alba MI is selling a 2002 Yamaha Mountain Max 700 with 3,000 miles on it for 2,200 or best. Has a can, reworked clutch and simmon skis on it. I will get some pics if you want.
 
Here are a few suggestions:

1. hartman for the tunnell extension and clutching
2. find a used 144 x 2 track
3. find a used skid from a AC/Ski/Pol (an actual mtn sled skid)
4. narrow the front end for ease of handling
5. gear it down
6. raise the handlebars
7. I am not sure what the motor needs but I am assuming tripple pipes

if you want a "MOUNTAIN MONSTER" like you are speaking of I would consider going longer than a 144....minimum 159" if you want to keep your "status." that being said, most people dont need anything more than a 151.....it has great traction and can hang when it comes to the deep.

I'm running a 151 and riding with 159-162's, you can not hang with them, only stay close. I'm going to a 16" x 153" ish track this summer, tired of trying to hang.

Its never cheap to build one.. If I remember I we had a little over $7000 into building this. I used the bulkhead, engine, controls, hood from a doner sled.

srx 700 trip, 162, ezryde, fabcraft ect.

How much do you want or have to spend? A 600 would not make a "Mountain Monster" sled in my opinion. I tend to agree with the suggestion of selling the 600 and looking for a Mtn sled. You can find sleds with some of the mods done for a lot less than building one yourself. I spend most of my time riding the flatlands and hills of ND with a stock Viper Mtn. A 144" track is not enough for serious mountain riding, but I can still have a lot of fun when I go there and it works great at home. That being said, there is a great deal of satisfaction in building it yourself and there are lots of aftermarket kits and mods you can do. It all comes down to how much time and money you have available. There is a lot of reading on TY forums to help you out, and some of the best information you get will come from the guys on here. Wish you well with you project.
 
I agree, start with a Mtn Sled to build a mountain monster. I have done the trail conversion a few times now, and say it is far easier to make a mountain sled trailable, than a trail sled good for the Mountains. I trust Tom Hartman would tell you the same thing.
 
My friend is selling a 2002 mountain max 700 with 3000 miles on it. I will get some pics soon if interested. He may go 2,000 for it.

Amen - I messed with this thing for 2 years. Gears, bars, rear skid, track, Holtzmann........ (check out the crap in my signature!) it never ends and the $$ get out of control for what you end up with. In the long run, it's still a glorified trail sled. Bought 07 Apex Mountain - hated it. Finally ended up buying a 09 SkiDoo XP 154 Summit X. I've bled blue (red/white in the 70's / 80's) all my sledding life and had reservations about switching, but this thing rips in the steep & deep. Also, my bro inlaw had a 151 Viper, big bore, geared, clutched, piped, yea, yea, yea --- it couldn't come close to hanging with an 08 Summit RENTAL in Cooke last year. I agree with A K - spend you $$ on an actual mountain sled & mod from there. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
 
I have rode my friends Ski Doo and Polaris mtn sleds and they are great. Both 08's and I can hang close, but and it is a big BUTT, I work harder and have to ride mistake free to 'hang' with them. I bleed blue when cut and will most likely ride my sled for a couple of more years. But, again with the big butt, I'll buy a different brand for my next Mtn sled. Yamaha does not make a great Mtn. sled. Theirs are just too heavy to be fun or to ride deep stuff.
 
i agree with the guys above i tryed all kinds of things on my 98 srx 700, 151 track, 6inch bar risers, race pistons reeds, and i put a 60 shot of nos ... it can be done if your hung up on yammie like we all are and still want to ride the steep and deep its tuff even with a full mod yammie... at the end of the day i have a fully mod trail sled and i got a polaris and fully modded that out the same way as the srx and it works better in the mnts... good luck and keep us posted the only thing i can say for the mnt monster is skid swap and lighten it up as much as you can.. get a small hole saw and go to town on everthing..
