Do you need tunnel protectors?

Hey folks,
I've been visiting this site for a while now but I just registered and this is my first post. Here goes...

I snapped this picture a couple of days ago while working on my 97 SX. I think it answers the question in the subject line. The previous owner had 48 1" studs in a 3/4" track and this was the result. Any thoughts?

Hopefully I've got the picture attached right.

WOW, have to have tunnel protectors and the picture prooves that. I would shear off some .060 alum and rivet in the tunnel from the under side.
 
Ya im with MRSLED, just patch it up. I dont know about anyone else but I can feel if my studs ever hit the tunnel. And that should have been felt. Dang another 6" you would have REALLY FELT IT! haha

Im thinking tunnel protectors!
 
If you need a set, i have both front heat exchanger & tunnel protectors, let me know.......James

It's got tunnel and heat exchanger protectors now. I put a new track on it as soon as I got it and put the protectors on then. Just hadn't got around to fixing the hole under the gas tank yet. The studs had hit the tank a little but no holes.

My sled has a .92" track with 1.075" studs now and even with protectors it hits the heat exchanger if the track gets loose. You can hear it easily when it happens and you can also see the damage. Is this a common problem?

with a .920 track and a 1.075. that should be safe with exchanger protectors and tunnel protectors...I never had anything hit the exchanger untill I went to 1.15 on a .920 track and even that was minimal. Are you sure they are 1.075"
 
I'd put a patch on the top side of the tunnel too. Would really suck to run out of gas when it rubs a hole in the tank. I run 1.25 studs no rubs. Maxdlx
 
I purchased the track used already studded. I'm pretty sure they're 1.075". I had a washer missing in the axle assembly which prevented the axle from getting tight. One of the tensioner nuts worked it's way off and allowed the track to get really loose. That's when it hit the heat exchanger. I've fixed the problem and don't think it will happen again. I was just curious.

How much should the track "sag" below the sliders when the sled is on a stand? I mostly trail ride and would prefer not to wear out the sliders too fast but also don't want the studs to hit the heat exchanger or tunnel.

LOL Ha, Ha,. Whats up Micha? Finally got around to fixing the tunnel huh. Hows the clutches? Get them aligned yet? Any snow yet? We got 10" at camp this past Friday night. I should have brought up the new Warrior. I just picked up a 136" ripsaw for the old srx. That should be fun. Find a job yet? Your gonna need one to keep that bone running. :Moon: Later
 
Ya I hear ya. So what does an 05 Warrior cost? What's happening? Parker told me it snowed up North.

I bought a tool from Rich and aligned the clutches. Engagement was still way too high so I went back to a stock primary spring. It's about 4200 now. That'll work. No snow or job yet. I have a bunch of interviews though and it got down to 28 last night. Who knows? Heard you got a new trailer? 3 place....How come you didn't have that last year? My back still hasn't recovered from picking that sled up into the bed of the truck. Oh well.

Ya, after last year I decided that I needed a bigger trailer. Of course my truck for this year is a foot lower also. He tell you about that?
