started sled today adjusted idle speed it was at 1300 brought it up to 1800 started ran fine came inside real quick and let it run all of a sudden heard the sled idle up ran outside and it was at 3500 or so so i shut it off what would cause it to do this? :o|

I have the same question. My sons 03 viper has been idling at about 1800 rpms and yesterday after about 40 miles when we stopped it would idle at about 4000. It did this a couple of weeks ago and I reset the idle back to 1800. I started it up today and let it run for awhile and it idled fine at 1800.

The power valve's were cleaned at the begining of the year and the sled was serviced at a yam dealer. We have only put 150 miles on it. Should I try to adjust them again? Which one would cause the problem more, the cleaning or the adjusting?

Yes I still have to do that as it idle's down slow. Would that cause the rpm's to stay at 4000? When it went to 4000 yesterday I hit the throttle to get it to come down but it didn't, keep on riding then the next time we stopped it was fine.

When I rode last year (when it was idling high), when I came to a stop in the trail and it was idling high, I hit the choke and it would idle down. That's when I knew it would need some more fuel in the lower circuit. If you can idle it down with the choke, then I would try turning the fuel screws out. I'm sure others will chime in, I'm not and expert. Just relaying what happened with me last year. I'm sure Daman will chime in if he's on tonight.

I am going out tomorrow morning and I will try that the next time it happens. Thanks for the info.

You need to clean and adjust the power valves.
What??? Not bashing, but the power valves do absolutely nothing at idle.

I would guess that your pilot screws are in a little too much which creating a slightly lean condition and caused it to rev up.

Thanks guys. Thats what I need to do. Took it out today and after our first stop it idled at 4000 and when I hit the choke it idled down to 1800. Put the sleds in the garage and will turn out the the screws. Thanks

Hey I had the same problem on my 02 viper what I did was sprayed some brake cleaner around the return spring for the throttle then hit it with wd-40 made sure it was nice and clean and it solved the problem I thought it was a carb problem at 1st try it. it just might work for you
