Hey, I just got in off the trails and i noticed that my guages were flickering on and off, on and off, then on for a couple seconds then off again? like when it is on the speedo is wrking and the tach is to but it's like its not getting power? Everything elce on the sled wrks perfect except the speedo now. I looked everything over and the gear and sensor on the jack shaft all look good and the connection going to the cluster is conected? Any idea whats going on?

probably a short in the wiring harness...i would try the harness under the motor first as that is the most common.

Man, tons of '02 & 03 Vipers having this problem. Mine did it last year. I will recommend checking your harness that runs under the motor for rubs, since it is free to check, but my money is on the stator failing. I've read a few posts where they found rubbed wires in harness, one found a burnt wire off the stator and was able to replace it, but majority needed a new stator. Unhook head light and I'll bet it works fine. Mine would shut off the display when I hit the brake, or switched from high/low beam. Also bogged in mid range if hand/thumb warmers were on highest setting, low voltage from stator messed with the cdi. FYI, need a fly wheel puller to get to stator, and be VERY CAREFUL with those stupid phillips head screws in the stator, pick-up coil, and bracket clamping the pick-up coil wires. They will strip very easily. Use perfect sized bit and helps to give the end of the screwdriver a thump with hammer. Make sure to check harness, don't want to see you throw $200+ stator at it and not fix...

Hey, i unpluged both my headlights and the dash worked perfectly fine, pluged one back in and the dash didn't work anymore......so if i have to replace the stator how hard is it and should i go aftermarket or oem?
Wow, another burnt stator in Ontario. Mine just went on my 03. Noticed Yamaha has a new part number for it too. Anyone think there might have been a problem, lol.

You'll need a fly-wheel puller to get the stator off. I borrowed one from my local dealer, doubt this would be an option if you don't buy the stator from them. Stator is behind the pull-rope recoil assembly, so remove pipe and can. The phillips head screws are VERY easy to strip, make sure you use the perfect size bit for them and are careful with them. They have lock-tight on them, so a pop on the end of the screwdriver with a hammer helps.
