There seems to be a lot of 02-03 Vipers with electrical problems recently. Most do NOT sound like the under motor wire harness issue. Most sound like a lack of overall power generation which points to the stator as an issue.
Please chime in if you've replaced the stator on your Viper (any year). Just trying to get a feel for how common it is.
Thanks!

Changed mine last year, around 2200 miles. I've also seen many posts about failed stators.

Yes, 04 Viper S with 4000 miles. Headlight dim, hand warmers low, dash blacking out and NO issues with wiring anywhere. Changed stater and all is good with 6800 miles.

Nothing so far.......close to 6000 miles. Other than Loctite2, what were the other Viper owner's symptoms?
Sounds a lot like what mine is doing... part of the reason I'm asking. Did you test before replacing and if so what and how???Loctite2 said:Yes, 04 Viper S with 4000 miles. I know you're looking for some kind of test with a meter, but try unhooking one or both headlights to take some load off the stator and then see if the gauge still shuts off or not. More than likely stator is weak and can't produce enough V to keep everything working.

I got a problem with an 03 Viper I just bought. On a cold start, no matter what the outside temp is, the sled fires right up, but the headlight is super super dim, no dash lights/speedo/tach. Plus the sled is acting like it is missing on a cyl or 2, and sputters and pops and won't get above 5-6k rpms and is just barely enough to engage and move the sled. But as it starts to warm up, the headlight will momentarily kick on, along with the dash cluster and runs like the beast it is, but it keeps doing that for quite sometime until it stays on.
After much messing around, it was the stator. Thanks to all the help on here, i got it fixed. No matter what kind of issue you are having, definitely a good idea to check for rub through; could prevent some costly repairs in the future! Thanks everyone for the help!

Guage only resets if I increase the demands put on the stator. So the answer to your question would be yes?mod-it said:I know you're looking for some kind of test with a meter, but try unhooking one or both headlights to take some load off the stator and then see if the gauge still shuts off or not.
