so i went on the first ride this weekend with my 01 srx with the new top end and everything seemed ok other than it backfired a couple times i started it up today and it started backfiring and running on two cylinders so i checked compression and it was low on the clutch cylinder so i tore the jug off and the plating is peeled off the exhaust side and of course my new piston with 80 miles on it is scored any idea why this happened

Did you measure ring gap when installing them? Were the rings still seated correctly on the pistons after the loss of compression?

i didnt measure the ring gap and the rings are seated correctly
carb are dirty ...not jet correctly .... boot from case to carb crack or bad seal crank( your running to lean)

carbs are clean and are jetted fat plugs were black and wouldnt a cracked carb boot cause probs on intake side not exhaust so i should suspect crank seal should i take the case apart now because of the nicasil shavings would the crank be likely damaged
well a crack boot will make the engine run leaner and make the engine faild but not many member seem to have problem with them......what size jet are u running is it a stock motor with stock head ....is it the first time it burn or its second time and still the same cylinder

Dosnt mean for sure that crank is junk but I would split the case and replace the seals just to be sure. Its not hard to do and tech. its maintenence work. (Seal dry rot /wear out) Did you have any problems before you freshened her up?

i bought the sled couple months ago with the jugs and pistons in a box i dont know the previous history but the price was right or so i thought there was minimal scoring on the intake side on all three the previous owner told me it still had good compression on all three when he took it apart but it lost some power so i ball honed the jugs put in new pistons could i have honed to much and caused it to peel? i initially had 150 lbs compression across the board also forgot to mention it has haucks big bore mains are 155 if i remember correctly also there is only 1100 miles on the sled
150 compression for a stock srx sounds high a little u will need to check squish for those heads

Not knowing the history of the sled, and buying it with the top end in boxes. I would have rebuilt it from the get go. In my opinion the guy didn't tear the motor down with good compression because of a lack of power. He missed some important detail.
To me it seems almost like a defect in the nicasil. Honing shouldn't have done anything to it. A ball hone won't do much to nicasil, it has been debated on here whether or not a ball hone even does anything to these cylinders.

It will deglaze them. It can also chip it when it hits the edge of a port...
