Another electrical question

Was riding my 2001 SRX this weekend. At about 70 mph, the tach would go to 0 and fluctuate back and forth. At the same time, engine developed what felt like a miss. I would slow down than would be fine. Changed all 3 plugs. Is it possible a fouled plug would be the issue. Also noticed when condition was acting up, temperature light would flash erratically also. Since changing plugs, condition has not occurred. Plugs, stator, harness???
 
If it is rubbed through, where do I look, how do I repair, and how long does it take?? I'm not very mechanically inclined to be honest with ya..............
 
typically under the engine itself (yes insert swear words here) else near the brake.

You need to pull the harness up from underneath (there are great posts on this, not sure the link)

You'll see where the stock coating (electrical tape?) has unwound, and you'll see the rub marks on the wires for sure.

Mine were pretty greasy, but after I used a rag to wipe down the wires, the rubs were obvious.

To fix, I cut out the exposed wire, soldered the connection, and shrink tubed overtop, then re-taped the entire harness.

I also relocated the harness itself to run in the front of the airbox, down the metal between engine and clutches, and back down to its original destination.

No more rub worries anymore

Hey everyone, got the SRX out of hibernation yesterday and started looking for the classic wire harness rub through. Didn't take me long. Found the blue wire grounding out right up where the hood opens/closes at the flex. Was rubbing on exhaust and melted the protective cover and the wire itself. I work at a Yamaha dealership and was looking through the service manual and found that the blue wire runs to the tach, headlights, stator, and temp light. Will be a very easy fix. I may be one of the lucky ones.
 
I just installed a protective sheath on my SX-R. I bought the harness sheath that is accordian and slit up one side. By cutting a V to the slit at one end, I was able to get it started on the wiring harness down underneath my exhaust manifold and then I just fed the sheathing in until it came out the other side. It took like 3 minutes and now my wiring is protected.

I'm going to manually ground out that wire and see if what I was experiencing happens. It should hopefully. Looking at the service manual, everything that was happening that blue wire ran to. I'll get this fixed and ride it and see what happens. Don't feel like spending a lot of time searching. Ready to ride!

That's a great idea. Might have to do that. Conduit is cheap.
