I have a co worker that is probably going to buy an 01 mxzx800 X package.

It has 5400 miles, and had a warranty engine rebuild in its first year. It there anything to look out for on these?

It appears pretty clean. We will be looking at it at lunch. He checked it out yesterday after work. Shocks were just rebuilt, and he is the original owner.
 
i had the same sled..it was a nice sled except the crank went one me for no reason one day & & the statorwent once also..i sodl it ot my buddy..i really liked the zx chassi sleds.i had 2 of them.an 01 440 mxzx & a 01 mxzx 800
 
That is good to hear. I know the 99 zx chassis sleds had some issues with suspension settings/ design, but for 01 I am sure all that was worked out.
So it was a crank issue huh? Apparently the local dealer sold and serviced it and my co worker is calling them about the work performed. It has somewhere around 4k on it since the rebuild, so I am sure it is fine, but we will take a compression test on it to quickly check engine health.

This one is all yellow, with the x package and DPM, shorty brake lever and riser bars.

Funny thing will be the transition for my co worker for a 85 skidoo MX that ahs been updated with newer plastic skis and such to this 01 mxz800. LOL

He is in for a big shock in technology, especially in the suspension area. Never mind the doubling of power from his 470cc.
 
yupp it should have the hpg rezi shocks on it also..i had more pics of it when it was together but i dont know where those went.my sled had close to 4,000 when the crank went out on it.& i believe all the mxz had the dpm those years but idk??it was a very fun & sharp sled with 1 3/4 paddel it was a whellie riding machine. other than those few problems i mentioned i didnt really have any suspension breaking failures or anything stupid like yamaha'a had..for example junk bearing etc..so if it is a good deal i say jump on it.but i can find the same sleds local here for under 2 grand just to let you know..but that is deffinitly alot of sled to be jumping on from a 85 to an 01..he will be happy thats for sure.

That would be enough to send me running....

I see its a friend but, if it was my friend, Idd tell him to keep looking...just me...

I did a engine rebuild by CHOICE at 15,000kms
 
Yeah it was a 2000, and not an 01 like he thought and it only had 110 psi in both cylinders when warm.

It ran well, but he was unwilling to come down any from 2300. So my co worker passed.

For a sled that needs at least a re ring probably after this season and shocks that had not been serviced since 02, it was not worth it. It was pretty darn clean though.
 
Have seen that in any brand of snowmobile, GF uncle has a 02 800 with 12000km on it and still pulls hard! they are a decent machine.

yeah, I can see that, but again, that ws just my opinion.

I ride proven reliable toys. My 1982 Bravo starts 3rd pull - EVERY TIME

Thought about a Grizzly 700, but BAD REVIEWS when the power steering first came out, so I bought a Kawasaki Brute Force 750 instead. Search for old atv's for sale..all you see is hondas and kawasakis.....

My buddy HAD to rebuild his Summit X after 3200K - crank, then again at 5500K...sold it for a 1987 Exciter..LOL

Other former riding buddy, formula III 600, blew it up 3x under 1000K, bought a 700 instead, insisted there was something wrong with it, cuz mine would blow it away

So, im my experience, I will NEVER recommend a bombardier....for someone else, they may swear on Skidoo, and avoid Yammy all together

So the dealer was amazed it only pulled 110psi per cylinder. It was a new equus (sp) 25 dollar compression tester, and the motor was warm as he just ran it around before.

6-7 pulls with both plugs out, and the throttle open and 110 was all both cylinders read.

I seemed to run just fine, and while he did have a decent yard to run it, it wasn't a big field. It to me seemed about the same power as my 600 xcsp. Apparently these whould be around 140 psi, so 110 is pretty low. I guess that could be expected with
5k or soon a motor.

These doos are actually pretty decent and built well. I would definitely own one of these zx chassis doos or newer over any cat.

bought my 02 mxz 800 in 05 for 2500 as a repo i used to work at a auto auction i have never had a problem w/ mine runs great ,same comp numbers as above so new pistons are going in next week

Interesting, so you too thought 110 was low.


What I don't get is that the local doo dealer said that the new gauge my friend bought literally minutes before using it today was out of whack. To me it sounds completely reasonable with 5k on a motor that apparently made 140 psi new would make only 110 now. Maybe this guy is not used to testing compression on a sled with 5k on it? LOL

I know it is not a 300 dollar matco or snap on compression tester, but come on....


He will try his gauge on his 90 (not 85) mx to see what that reads.

And if it seems like the gauge is fine, I will bring the suspect tester over to said dealer, and have them verify the compression tester with their expensive one on a test subject motor. That will clear things up for "Don" at Cedar Creek motorsports. To me this "don" guy needs to be set straight.
 
i was lookin at a few of theme really loved the looks but found my 02 viper for 2000 had 3800 miles i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it. But those seem like nice sleds my buddy has a 01 700 but his has ben beat hard
