I just turned 4,000 miles on my sled (2001 SRX) this past weekend. I'm sure that the rings are original. Should I change them? How often should I do this in the future? I would like to get another 2000-3000 miles on it before I have it gone through top to bottom. Any thoughts?
I re-ringed at just under 5,000. Be sure to check the other clearances, etc if you do just rings.

1. You're better to post in the SRX section (vs the SXr)
2. Yes, 4-5K is a good time to change them. That way you'll get 10-15K on the top end before the pistons are out of spec.

I would think about doing it real soon...
A RIM JOB??? I get one every time I ride it... (my SRX that is)

a leak down test will tell you when to replace rings not mileage. for 2 stroke trail sleds if you see 20% leakage or more it's probably time to hone the cylinders & put in new rings. should also check piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance - may need new pistons too.

I've got 11,500 on my 98 srx, and still runs like new.

at 5000 miles you are just breaking everything in,don't need to change rings every 3000 miles according to my Yamaha Dealer.

The thing people don't under stand is at high mileage your not feeling it in the a$$ dino but your loosing slowly over time performance and efficiency and the risk of piston skirt damage increases over time as rings wear and the piston starts to rock. at higher mileage you have blow by contaminating incoming air charge decreasing performance.
last year we did my BIL '00 600 trip had 5200 miles on it yep ran good but after the ring job throttle response was waaay up,you could tell right away
it was more snappy and better on fuel.
so you be the judge yea they run for ever but if you'd like peak performance and efficiency back ring it it's not that coasty really.
oh yea and our leak down test showed within
spec(10-14%leakage across @ 125 psi)..
$.02

dynotech jim did a test 11/12/2004 on leakage & it's affect on h.p.. it's in the subscriber side archives on his site. he took a '04 rev600 that had 50% leakage on one piston & 30% on the other. it pulled 114.1 h.p.. they replaced the pistons & rings & recorded 9-10% leakage. with new pistons & rings it made 117.3 h.p.. that's only 2.5% more h.p..
no way you can feel that difference on the trail.

The throttle response, crispness, on and off the trigger is what you can feel
oh yes there a diff.,, i noticed right away after breaking in.
