speedo pin

Looking for a workable method to remove a broken speedo pin that broke off inside the drive shaft. I got the majority of it out but it looks like the outside layer of wire wrapped around the pin is still stuck inside the hole on the end of the shaft. I can push in the new pin but not far enough to grip and hold. All help greatly appreciated. Happy Riding.

Try a drywall screw. Sometimes you can get it to grab the leftovers if you screw it in and pull it out with plyers.

Dental pick and a couple beers....I also heard on here where someone pounded it in and they got it to fit, but that is only a last resort!!!!!

You could also use a drill bit in the same method as described above with the drywall screw method. Screw it in by hand or with plyers....don't put it in a drill and go crazy! Then pull it straight back out.

The biggest f-up would be making the square part in the shaft round!!!!IE going crazy!!! So be careful!!

thats exactly what i did on my vmax, worked great!

I would take a tap (4-40, 6-32 or 8-32 thread) and push it in while turning it. The threads on the tap will catch the remnants of the speedo key and you should be able to put it out, even a piece at a time. The easy out and drill bit does not have enough edges to catch the fragments. I use taps all the time to pull out the metal bits which result from drilling/tapping deep blind holes.

Because I had butchered the insert in the end of the shaft, I had to remove/replace shaft insert as well as key... used a dremel tool with carbide bit to get leftover key material out, then drilled out insert with many progressively larger drill bits until it fell out... heated the shaft end and then reinstalled new insert... carefull insert is installed correctly ie. (end for end).... tj

Thanks for all the tips guy's. It is a Bi#@h of a job no matter how i go at it. I purchased a gallon of Crown Royal and hopefully i can have the pin out before i can't see what the heck i am doing. lol. Cheers and keep the rubber side down.
