Got a 2003 600 venture, - ran good, did 90 mph with no problem,-- but did it at 9000 RPM. As sugested, I added weight to tip. Now it still turns 9000 RPM but I lost 10 to 15 MPH and primary is running HOT,.. Both clutches used to be same temp.. did not touch anything else, all stock clutching..- P-G-P, loaded 8DG's, (4.5g each hole) red sec. @ 70. With that extra weight do I have to change spring on primary? I also have a spare haulk green spring for the secondary, and a haulk helix 51/45 laying around, any sugestions??

Take the cover back off and make sure there is no binding in the weigts, rollers and bushings??? Double check your secondary if you've had it apart since the 90 MPh run???

in theory it should have reved lower and you should of went faster there must be something binding.
thanks crewchief47 & tedgoesfast.. I pulled clutch back apart and inspected, there is no binding that I can see or feel. I recleaned and took some 320 grit emery to it, I will also give the belt a good bath, about 700 miles on belt, still well within spec. I'll be heading up tonight and will retry. I'll post results on monday.thanks.

Ok. ended up puting on new belt, as the other one was on the lower limit,. belt is running even with second sleave,, after belt breakin, response seems ok, but rpm's are still up around 8800-9000, .. My main concern is that the primary is still getting to hot!! , I marked primary, & is running where I think is supposed to about 3/8 to 1/2'' from the top. Can I put a softer spring in there? to maybe clamp on belt more, or do anything to the secondary? Sled only has 1600 miles on it, without any binding in the drive unit that I can tell. Sugestions?
My brother has the exact same sled, and it also spins to 9000 at WOT, we were running side by side before I made any changes, added 4.5 to the tip and seemed to have lost some speed, he will now pull on me with him and his kid on the sled. I have not tried with extra weight on yet to see if that would help,(he probley got more traction then me in that situation, extra 100lb at least), I only weight 160lb. What should I try next?
My wife has a 2001 600 Dlx, she has always been overreving, 8,800 to 9,000 rpm. Terrible fuel milage. The gearing is 21/39. She is not a performace minded rider, I did however switch out the clutching complete with my set which has Turks tuning recommendations for a 700 SX. I did this just to see what would happen. Again WOW what a difference. Peak RPM is now down to 8,500 cruise RPM is now 6,000 rather than previous 8,000. I have ordered all components to upgrade her clutch to what mine has. It might not be perfect but it is MUCH better than OEM. I have not gotten enough distance on sled to update what kind of milage differance.
I believe this is what I ordered, 8ch weights, 4.5gr in first hole, 3.1 gram in tip. W-S-W tall spring for primary, 51/43 helix and green spring in seconday. 21/39 gears. I did not order any spring shims as I have a couple ready if I need them. I did not do the head mod yet. Maybe in summer. Al
still looking for guidence, tried my old srx spring (ywy) little higher ingagement, but still over revs.. but with the less total force the primary is running cooler.. was thinking of using shorter (than the srx) but longer then pgp,, with less total force.. maybe ysy or gsg.. to lower rpms & get better grip on belt.. there is no binding going on-- secondary is not sliping and is running cool.. compared to primary.. any thoughts???......
For my 600 SXR, it had low engagement rpm (approx. 3000) and could top out at 9200 rpm. Opened up the primary and the spring was in 2 pieces! Must have been binding up at those rpm... so I put in new primary YGY (stock) and drilled out the tip weights in the 8DG arms (stock as well) and put in 4.5g. Now the engagement is just over 4k and it tops out around 8600 rpm! Significant improvement! I'm very happy with the results.
