Hello,
I was driving along and everything stopped- no warning. I stopped and tried a re-start and is like the battery was disconnected, no power. Sled seems normal on pull start. If it were a car, its like the solenoid switch went.
Are there a couple of things I can check out?
Thanks

with that mileage....sounds like a wiring harness rub thru. check the wiring by the carbs, as kevin @ port yamaha told me they like to rub thru there, also check the wiring that runs underneath the motor.

great...i'll check it out...if that is it, can you splice and heat shink a piece in?
Thx!

sure, but most likely just the coating has rubbed thru off the wires, and when the wires hit the chassis or engine, they ground out and then its game over.

I had a quick look and didn't see anything up top...what's involved in seeing under? Is there a certain path to follow?

One last question....how hard easy is it to see the harness under the motor?
Unplug at the hood, release the clamps (couple under exhaust pipe) and ties, tie a string to it, and pull the whole harness out from behind the engine. Then you can check it out real close. Some rub-throughs are easily visible.
Use the string to pull it back in place. Be sure to secure it with the clamps and ties, and make sure it is not against any sharp edges.

Just one more quick post on this...when I bought this sled the battery was dead.. I put a used one in and it wouldn't hold a charge. I then bought a brand new one and it worked OK for a week. It was dead the day before I went out. I charged it 100% and it worked well until the sled died...would a wire rub out have these symptoms?
Absolutely........ classic rub-through sympton. Just went through the exact same senerial.... 02 Viper 7500 miles.
There is plenty of slack in the harness to re-route it on top of the carbs and along the frame by the clutch cover to the front. Once you pull it out there's no reason to put it back under the motor. Howie

Hello,
I took the harness out and the inspection is ok. Turned out to be a decent amount of slack under the motor and it was well taped up. I re-charged the new battery and still no power...any other things to check before I buy a stator / cdi etc.
Thanks

im thinking im having symptoms of a rub thru problem on my 04 viper er but want to double check befor i go thru all the work of removing the harness, my dash went completely dead three or four times, no tach , lights indicators or dsc light when i start it . so i moved the harness around under the motor only to find out i now blew the fuse for the headlight. it only has 1,000 miles on it but is this normal for such low miles?
