speedo Needle...

Well i broke the square speedo needle down by the axle... bad news is, it broke off well inside the shaft i only got about 1/4 inch of the old needle. Guess i'm riding without a speedo and odometer the rest of this season till i do bearings in spring...

Whats the best way to fish that sucker outta there?

slide hammer. take the whole connector out. if you drill a small pilot hole and thread a machine screw into it that will fit into the jaws of your slidehammer, and pull easy, it will come out. connector pt#8k4-47577-00-00
 
I've seen many posts on this topic but I don't think there's any easy way to fish it out unless your extremely luck and it's not rusted in you might,and that's a big might,you may be able to use a real fine pick hook it just right and pull it out.If your going to wait until you change the bearing it might be a good idea to stand the shaft on it's end and let some penetrating oil soak in the hole for a day or 2,you never know you may get lucky and it'll fall out.
 
yea, i replaced it this time last winter, so i imagine its not in there too horribly... Slide hammer i may try.... I took the old needle out and found out its in the shaft, i'm like ahh F*ck this i'll wait. but i will try the slide hammer idea.
 
I just did mine 3 hours ago and it went MUCH better than I expected. Someone on here said to use a drywall screw and I thought, yea right. Well it worked perfectly...sorry for doubting the person that suggested it. I went to Home Depot and bought a fine threaded drywall screw. It was the self-tapping type and since I didn't want the end (drilling part), I cut the screw off right at the first thread. My 16 year old son grabbed the screw, put it in the axle and within 30 seconds said it was out? I couldn't believe it. I expected to have to pull the axle out of the sled but this trick worked perfectly.

I was also lucky enough to be able to change the speedo side bearing at the same time without getting into the chaincase. ;)! ;)!

You can at many hardware stores, just not the big box ones. They want you to buy a whole box.

Now if you need like 10 screws or less, it is cheap, but if you need like 20, you might as well buy the box of 100 or so as it will be cheaper.
