I just had a motor rebuild on an 1991 phazer . It runs fine , however I am hearing a ting or ping coming from the clutch side cylinder . When you give it some gas it goes away . But at idle you can really hear it and it seems like its louder on that cylinder. anyone have any idea ? Is this ok ?
thanks
thanks
is the clutch rattling....

yea it rattles alittle , but and this will sound a little weird ,I have a stethiscope and touched several places on the engine and exhaust , I found on one of the head bolts nut threaded down on it; the loudest/clearest sound from there. Not really sure if its an echo or ..,..could be clutch....big-kid said:is the clutch rattling....

It could be piston slap. Clearance between the piston and cylinder and the oscillation of the piston can cause noise when the piston skirt "slaps" the wall. There is a recent thread here on that. Were Wiseco pistons used?
Have you talked to whoever did the work?

Not sure what pistons were used. But I can tell you , I prefer yamaha pistons . I would suspect they are wiseco pistons.

All i can say is when using wisecos you have to make sure the piston clearances are spot on. When using wisecos on a machine with iron bore cylinders you should always have them bored out to the next size and to wisecos specs.A worn std bore cylinder and std wisecos is asking for trouble. The piston is manufactured to std bore specs which is loose to begin with, now your adding more piston clearance because of worn cylinder, even slightly worn your addding more clearnce to an already loose fitting piston. Also wisecos expand slower and more than a cast piston, they need more warm up time. Personally when i have used wisecos on an ironbore motor (phazer) i have always had it bored out oversized to wisecos specs and used oversized pistons, this takes away any doubts about the piston clearances. ?????? maybe the problem? hope you figure it out.

The owner of the shop , listened to it and said it sounds like piston skirt is hitting , he told me he can pull it apart and see if the piston is bad , he does NOT use wiseco he doesnt like them huh....interesting. He agreed it does sound very strange; like the motor is rapping and going to come apart . I told him I didnt like it to sound like that and Im not going to be happy if it blows up. Let ya know , said it might take a 2 weeks to get to it .

wiseco and any forged piston expand more than cast ,and need more clearance thats why you hear the noise of piston slap ,at first but normally goes away once warm i dont like the noise either, stick with cast for normal unmodified motor just my thought

yea , The dealer is going to pull it apart to see why , he said he didnt use wesco or wiseco pistons, he did agree it sounds really bad . I will let you all know by this thread when I hear back from him . Might be two weeks he said.

I wanted to let ya all know , I got an answer to this problem. It is excessive play between piston wall and piston . He has gone ahead an ordered a new larger piston and will have it back together mid week . And no charge , he has stood by and going to make it right . Nice , Hard to find good repair shops , guess Ive got one and will be doing more business with him in the future .
heres a pic of the sled , its in good shape

Well heres the deal , he changed the piston put a new cast bigger one in and started it up ....same problem same sound , it seems the part of the piston skirt is cut out on the intake side and it lightly rubs on the side of the skirt legs , know what I mean . I have it back home now , he didnt charge me and I guess I will have to live with it .
