oil pump question?

if a Yami tripple engine were turning in reverse direction (just like a Rev with RER), would the oil pump continue to pump?

any help is appreciated..

lol where is this coming from TJ,,lol i would say yes it's a piston type pump so rev or forward should pump.

a little Frankenstein science at the moment... was hoping it was piston but hadn't yet smashed one open... thanks for the info...

No It wouldn't!

The oil pump wouldn't pump any oil, if the engine was running in reverse, ie reverse rotation. That is why yammie only offered mechanical reverse. If you take a rev or polaris and drive it in reverse for a long period of time, the engine will seize. This is another reason alot of sled rental companies rent cats and yammies.

the vmax4 motor's run in revers and the pump on that and a tripple is dang
near identical(look and part#).

I wasn't aware that VMax4's ran in reverse... Was it a deliberate attempt by Yamaha? If so, how was it achieved?

thanks

in short....

right... the way the v4 is set up with the external pto shaft it has to rotate
in revers so the pto shaft(clutch)turns forward like any other sled, spark timing is how it's done..

I'm hijacking my own thread here, but, how is engine reversal achieved?... Is the engine stopped and then restarted, or is reversed while nearly running (like RER) with timing somehow also altered?

Kind of need the steps taken from a forward running engine to reversal.... Trying to get my head around this... I have zero experience with a V4... never even seen under the hood of one... any info is appreciated..

thanks.. tj..

I've heard on Ski-doo's RER....it is achieved by :

Shutting down spark...
just before engine stops rotating..around 50 rpm (just a guess at rpm) and at a pre determined point before pistons reach TDC.. they fire spark agai...this causes the pistons to go back down instead of compleating running past tdc...so basically 1 very drastic spark knock. ;)!

when you pull start a v4 your pulling it(turning)backwards,,the pull rope is
at the top of the housing vs bottom.so when it starts is running backwards(CCW)vs (CW)on a traditional sled.

so once it's running backwards/CCW, how then does the rotation change to CW? if this is possible?

or does it have a mechanical reverse as part of the chain case as all other Yamis?...

I think I may be confused as to the ability to change direction at will and just that those engines always run CCW...

if this can be made clear to me, I'll leave this alone for a week or so:)

thanks for the reponses... tj..

it doesnt ever change rotation, once it starts it stays running in that direction, there was no reverse on any v4..
