98 Srx 700 Help

hey guys, i am looking to buy a 98 srx. it has 3k miles and is stock other than an aftermarket can. my questions are what do i need to be looking for? what goes wrong with these sleds? how long on avg do they hold up before a rebuild is needed when taken care of? is the stock skid a good one or does it need to be replaced? how does the crank hold up? thanks for your help......
 
run the vin # with a dealer too see if the crank welding has been done, they thread together and had some issues with unthreading. wire harness rub through under the engine( not just a yamaha problem) take an allen wrench with you and see if the power valves look good( not stuck and cable not pulled through )expensive fix. the skid has alot to be desired compared to newer ones, but it is still better than alot of others and especially older ones. the engine should be freshned up every 3000 miles(all 2 strokes should be) but i have heard of many in the 15,000 mile range without being touched mine has almost 10,000mi. hope this helps. over all you cannot go wrong with any srx period.
 
If you can hit 100 mph on it, then I would buy it. I second the idea of taking an allen wrnch with you to pull the power valves. I bet two out of three are pulled through.

You need to be out on the Minocqua trails right now! :brr
 
The power valve is pulled by a cable operated by a servo. The power valve is made of aluminum and actually seems to wear through. This one is trashed because the barrel of the cable pulled through.

They can be repaired for about $20 each times 3.

What causes it? I am going to guess that as the valves get carboned up, the cable has to pull harder to pull the valve, and if bad enough.....they pull through. The valve itself works smoothly, but when carboned up, it will pull harder. If they stick too hard and often enough, they self destruct like my picture above.
 
so if i buy the sled should i just automaticlly replace them? and or does the rule it you replace one replace all come into effect?

I would not automatically replace them. Take them out and clean 'em up good. If any are pulled through I would have all three repaired myself.

They cost about $90 each or more new from the dealer. I had 2 out of 3 damaged, so I had all 3 repaired with stainless steel ends. About $72 with shipping is what I paid to have mine fixed.

They could be just fine.....you won't know until you look.
