How change coolant?

1-Remove exh pipes
2-raise up the rear of the sled
3-remove seat and rear bumper cover
4-remove rear heat exchanger bleeder bolt
5-remove rad cap
6-remove drain bolt(sxr same),let drain till out,then i like
to use a little shop air blowing through the rear bleeder bolt hole
to force out any coolant remaining in the coolers.(have rad cap back on first)
7-replace drain bolt.

then you'll need to bleed the system next when refilling;
(this procedure is the same on any redhead triple or '97 to '01 twin)

Step 1,

1.remove seat,and bumper cover
2.lift up back of sled slightly higher than motor
3.remove bleed bolt on rear heat exchanger
4.Slowly add coolant in the hose(fill port ),allow the coolant
to drain out the bleed hole until all air bubbles disappear, re-tighten bleed bolt set sled back down.

Step 2,

1. loosen/remove the bleed bolt on top of the thermostat housing(head)
2. Add coolant and allow to flow out bleed hole until all air bubbles
disappear.
3.tighten bleed bolt, make sure system is full and cap is on.re-check
coolant level.

Step 3,

Start the engine and run @ 2500 to 3000 rpm's till warmed up and
coolant circulates good, check heat exchangers should be warm
to the touch.after sitting over night and top off (a) if needed.


if air is still expected repeat above steps..

Hey Daman - Great instructions !! Couple quick questions though...

1. What coolant type and brand do you recommend? (Green, Dexcool, extended life...) I ask because I heard that this can affect water pump life on some engines.
2. What "mix" (50/50, 60/40, etc)
3. In step 4 of Step 1, you say to "add coolant in the hose". By this do mean at the overflow bottle, because on my engine the rad cap is on the overflow bottle?
4. In step 2 of step 2, am I also adding coolant at the Rad cap/overflow bottle opening?
5. My seld does not have a bleeder on the thermostat housing, will I get the same effect by keeping the rad cap off my overflow bottle?

Sorry for all the questions, but I hear it can be a b*%tch to get all the air out

yes adding it too fill port as it's running out of bleed hole.

If you are just changing the coolant i like to do it differently since you will never get it 100% out anyway.

-Remove seat.
-Remove rear rad hose.
-Elevate the FRONT of the sled as high as you can.
-This should drain most of the coolant out.
_This way there is no removing pipes, and most importantly NO MESS in the engine compartment as coolant really does make a mess.

FIll up and bleed using the bleeder bolt and your good to go!

Hope this helps, this is what I usually do to remove and engine but will work great for just changing coolant.
