Overheated 600 Venture

A friend of mine has a 02 or 03 Venture redhead 600. It was towing a fish house through slush and lost all its coolant. By the time they realized it seized up (no coolant, no warning light). It is over 5 hours away and he is dealing with a mechanic over the phone. So far they say the cylinders are ok but needs at least pistons. They can't find an obvious leak and couldnt do leakdown since there was little compression.

Is it worth fixing an engine this overheated? Will the seals, rods, crank and bearings be shot also? He doesnt know if the head made it or not.
 
Sure, fix it up. My friend has a 440 pro-x that threw a stud through the bulkhead heat exchanger. Seized it up solid. we took it back to his house, pulled the jugs and it was fine believe it or not. He was running amsoil Dominator premix and there was no damage whatsoever. We replaced the rings and honed the jugs just to be safe. It was so hot that it turned the red paint on the heads brown.
 
He had the same problem with the head......Lets hope its all good after new pistons, rings, clean jugs and new head.

It sounds like the lower end is ok. You just hate to throw all that money at it just to have a crank bearing or something else go.

I email him the entire repair manual yesterday, hopefully he can get back ice fishing soon....Good luck
