Broken speedometer question

My SRX speedo quit yesterday so I pulled the gear housing off the bearing to make sure the bearing wasn't shot. The bearing was fine but the short connector that slides into the axle was twisted off. I believe the cause was becouse I just switched axles and I think there was probably something down inside that caused the connector to be in a bind. Either way, there is something down in the axle now that won't allow the connector to go in all the way.
Here's my question. Is there anyway to get the broken peice out of there with out taking out the axle? Does that insert in the axle press in or screw in and if so how do you screw it out? I think I can shorten the new connector and make it work but if I can do the job right, I want to do it right! Help :wel:
 
i have gotten the broken end out useing a small drill but you have to be careful and do slowly or it will bind and break drill

Bah..who needs a speedo. Are you sure that bearing isnt bad on speedo side?

I actually made it home last night a lot faster without the speedo, so I might be using a little more restraint with it working! I'm going to change out the bearing also but I just had it loose so I plan to change it without removing the axle. I think the fitting must be pressed in the axle so a drill is probably my only hope. I just don't thi k I have room to use one with out removing the axle?

You lost me there. When you say fitting do you mean bearing? The bearing has a collar with set screw(s) that are accessed from the bottom.

There is an insert in the end of the axle that is made to accept the square speedo cable. I was hoping it could be removed by unscrewwing it, but I'm pretty sure it's pressed in.
 
not sure its press cause on viper u need to screw a bolt in it for the speedo sensor ..... just not sure if its the same shaft

Okay you mean for the speedo...my service manual doesnt show anything that would go in or come out except for the small speedo extension. Just hose it down with PB blaster or wd40, might get lucky and get the piece out. Use a die grinder and small end mill carbide, be careful not to grind out the shaft.
 
The parts breakdown lists a part number for the insert. Does anyone know if you can get this out of the shaft?

8K4-47577-00-00 called a connector, but this is not the short flexible pc. It's the pc it slides into.

Hi, The insert or "connector" as the book calls it is very easy to get out. It is pressed in but the hole in the shaft is deeper than the insert so there is room to push back the broken drive key to make it possible. I have done it many without failure using the following methode.

1 Get as much of the broken drive key out as possible before you start.

2 Drill a 7/32 hole in the center of the insert.

3 Tap that hole with a 1/4 - 20 tap.

4 Screw a 1/4 - 20 bolt into that hole and somehow attach it to a slide hammer (it doesn't need to be a big one). Give it a couple of hits and it will be in your hand.

5 Just tap a new one in with a soft (brass) hammer and you will be good to go.


I have made an attachment with 1/4 - 20 threads that screws onto my slide hammer just for this purpose. It has worked perfect every time. All of my sleds have removable side pannels which makes things a breeze. If yours doesn't you will have that to contend with but it is still possible.

Yes this is my biggest problem with the SRX I can't get at it very well. :o| I'll try the ideas you guys gave me. Great info! Worst case I'll have to remove the axle and order a new connector/insert.

Can anyone chime in and give the details, in order, to get to the speedo gear? Do I need to remove the side belly pan? Can I do it without? Do I need to reove the clutch?

I put a drill in my speedo and it works on that end, so it must be the gear. Although I can't turn the gear inside the cable. Shouldn't I be able to turn it if it is broke at the drive shaft??

take the 3 nuts of the gear unscrew cable and put gear housing n coke a cola over night then some lube and work it it will free up

I think you're right....just never done it before. What do I need to take off the secondary? Will it be possible to loosen the bearing set screws without removing the skid and track?

To take the secondary off, you need a wrench to remove the retaining bolt, I think it is a 14MM

You can take the bearing out without removing the shaft from the sled, remove both set screws and you should be able to slide it off that end, you may have to hit it with a chisel to get it to slide off, this is assuming you've removed the speedo cable housing below the secondary.
