My dad has a 94 VMAX 600. When idling it burns alot of oil (smokes a lot). The plugs are oil covered. I want to check the oil pump alignment marks at WOT (per the service manual) but there aren't any marks as far as I can tell. There isn't even the tab on he lever where the mark should be. Am I missing something?

Ok, that would explain it then. What should the measurement be and exactly how is it measured? I will look again in the manual, but I don't believe it mentioned this info. Thanks much!

1994 vmax 600 oil spec....
27 to 29mm on cable free play...
Do these checks in this order;
1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)
2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is here )
3rd- set oil pump cable free play here and here to 27(richer)to 29(leaner)mm

Thank you very much! That's exactly the info I needed. I am not sure why this is not in my service manual. I will have to look again. You are a great asset to this site Daman, keep up the good work.

No problem,good luck, try to shoot for 27-28 oz's of oil per tank fuel(10 gals) is right around 45-48:1 in that area. but that stock setting should get ya close.may have to tune little if you feel like it.

Both my 94's had marks on the pumps. I just went through this problem. It took a while to see the marks. I had to take a scotch brite pad to it. On mine to see the marks i had to get on the clutch side of the sled. Follow the cable down to the arm. The mark was on the face of the arm and on top of the pump housing. Not sure if all have marks but mine surely did.

somebody must have or it was a late model change of the pump on yours because '94's had no pump marks,states in the yamaha FSM and at your dealer to use cable free play to set pump.n8sjh said:Both my 94's had marks on the pumps. I tried to adjust the oil pump cable free play today. Here's the problem, at WOT the max freeplay (dim A) I could achieve was approx 6mm. I could not get anywhere near 27-29mm of freeplay. What am I missing?

you don't use the throttle lever you just pull the two cable halves appart
as far as they go and then measure gap.

I was confused about the WOT part. I have set the idle, set the throttle freepaly, and the oil pump free play and it is still spitting and sputtering. So, I have taken off the carbs and they have enough dirt in the opening to plant a tree. So I am going to clean those real well tomorrow and check the jetting. If it's still running bad, then I am going to disconnect the oil pump and run premix to see if it's the oil pump failing. Thanks again!
