I will be soon starting my project sled. It is a 1998 yamaha vmax xtc. I plan on turning it into some what of a ditch banger. I want to put a bigger track on it such as a 1.5 inch lug. what will i have to do so it will fit.Also what ideas do you got for me to make it better in the ditch. I would like to make it lighter. and put better shocks, hear are my plans so far:
1.5" track
polished tunnel(for looks)
viper shocks(or better)
paint it black
reeds
c&a adx skis
transfer rods

i am also looking for cosmetic ideas so if you got any sweet ideas or sleds, tell me or post a pic...any ideas apreciated

You should really look into a different skid. You'll be busting that W arm when you submit enough abuse to the skid. Seen buddies try to ditch bang their vmax's and pay for it later. I'm sure it'll take quite a bit abuse, but the W arms are notorious for breaking.
 
Yep, replace the rear suspension!
I believe the 1.5 track will work, but you will not be able to stud it. If you have tunnel and heat exchange protectors, you will have to remove them or notch the track where it contacts them.
Re-Valved Viper front shocks may be a good upgrade also!

now thats what im talkin' bout!

i agree on the skid swap. i welded my w-arm 4 or 5 times with the no-action skid. some mods i have done to improve ditchbang-ability (since i consider myself an expert ditchracer :horsehock )in addition to the mods in my sig
-skid plate is a must
-handguards for those low tree branches
-bar risers
-powder bar type grab handle
-also i disconnected one side of the swaybar for steep sidehilling.
 
i was thinking about changing the rear skid but im not sure. i want something that is easy to fit ie.not alot of drilling...got any ideas?
 
I've ditchbanged mine for years and nothing has broken, viper rear shocks and 1.25" kimpex agressor, C&A ultra III's in the front it floats through the ditches quick.

1.5" track might be a stretch...I just put an 1-1/4" on my 97 Vmax and had to clip that to fit. Definitely measure before buying though.

Same here, I though the aftermarket "transfer rods" were responsible for most W arm brakeage. I have 3000 hard miles on mine and the W-ARM didn't have a single crack in it when I had the skid out this summer. I have the stock transfer arms.
 
It might be a good idea to get a taller seat, or raise your original seat.
It will be much more comfortable with tall bars and it will be easier to transfer from sitting to standing.
