happened on o1/o3/o9
On Sat. about 30* on a lake, 6 to 7 TH RPM's. Center cylinder took
a s##t. It was burned down on exhaust side. [melted exhaust edge]
I got to take it apart Thursday night, I got the center jug off,but I see that the base gasket was one piece so I took off # 1 cylinder [PTO] looking good ,cheaper all the time........WRONG..
Pulled #3 [MAG] cylinder off SCUFFED , SCORED intake and exhaust sides.
I now need help to know why it went down.
First,,carbs are and were cleaned before this happened.
Power valves were cleaned just before this trip.I use iso with each tank,
oil use is at 18 to 20 oz. for 5.5 gals of fuel
After the carbs were cleaned the machine was rode from home to Hayward WI. [-8 to +10 THURSDAY 100 mi.]-17 to +10 FRIDAY rode about 90 mi.
SAT +5 to +30 rode about 45 mi. till poof.
The spark plugs were all cardboard box brown. [real safe,,I thought]
The head is dark brown to black in all THREE domes .
Now i have two ideas of why this happened but want to hear some expert ideas.

By the way she had a arctic cat to ride home. She told me she is not ready to turn green. [thank god for that]

Post pics of the parts. Experienced guys on the forum can "read" the damage and help figure out what caused it.
Other questions:
- What fuel grade was in the tank?
- how old was the fuel?
- what main jet sizes are in the carbs?
- how many miles on engine?
- stock or aftermarket parts on engine?

check seals, carb boots, vent hose ,take fuel sample from lines attached to carbs, or lift sleds rear take fuel sample from bottom of tank in front with clear bottle, any seperation or foggy look thats problem, dont use iso dont need anymore alcohol, as for scoreing it starts on one side and builds pushing piston to other side and scores that side, probably started on exhaust on mag first, so check that seal and carb first ,are you jetted fatter for crapinal? take off carbs and drain in clear container

When you take the carbs off keep them upright and don't let any of the gas seep out. Remove the float bowls with the carb upright and be sure not to spill the gas in the bowls. Dump the fuel on a baking sheet or something like that. You might be able to see if there was water in the fuel.
Now I am up here in Canada so I don't know the whole ounces to gas thing (milliliters up here). But isn't 20 ounces to every 5.5 gallons of gas a little rich on the oil to gas mixture. Even though oil is a little combustable that would lean you out a bit.

Oh god dont start another thread..lol
Have a look at my thread about fuel..I think you could get some ideas!

Posting pis for dr4pat
I am just helping resize and post these pics. Here are some pics of dr4pats Viper engine failure described in the first post of this string. Please comment if you can help dr4pat determine what may have caused the failure. See the next post for 2 more pics.
Thx

me thinks its a fuel/oil ishu what is jetting?looks like all scoreing starts bellow rings were there should be a oil film, once the cylinder starts to build up rings get pushed back allowing combustion to go by creating hot spot on piston which starts to deteriate

shouldnt the piston have wash marks on the intake sides?
pistons all black wouldnt that be lean?
fuel would wash the piston off from the intake port spots

Take pics of the pistons under the dome, flip it over.
How many miles on motor?
When was the last time rings were put in?

First thanks too mdbauer62 for posting my pictures!!!!!!!!!
no1 chevyboy jetting is stock fuel screws at about 1 7/8 to 2 turns out
snakebite the one good cylinder [pto] is a little lighter on intake side.pics are hard to tell, but they are very dark brown, maybe a little black.center is clean, it was run on the trailer with out the plug, I asume this blew off any thing that was there.
The scuffed ,scored mag side is also dark to light black.
dv8 I will try to get pics of underside of pistons as soon as posible, if I can email them to someone to post for me.mdbauer62 are you up to that again????
again thanks to everyone!!!!!!!!!

first of all you dont need the iso there is enough alcohol in the fuel already. second in the second pic the one with the burn't piston it look like the piston hit something on the other side but the heads look okay. was the motor completly warmed up before riding, and i agree in the pics there is not a lot of wash showing i'll find some pics of some good wash if you need.
In my first post, I said I had two ideas why this happened.
1= snow ingestion, and 2= no carb heat on.
any toughts on this????

its just my opinion but the heaters wouldnt have done this on/off, and as for snow injestion unless you were barying it in powder and had air/air box leak on mag side this wouldnt be problem (just my opinion )
how long before it happened did you get fuel
