What is the best "product" to use to combat E10?

Hi everyone,
I have spent the past hour reading the various threads about blowing up motors, and E10 gas. To say the least, I am worried that I will burn up my 2000 SRX and ,my 1991 Phazer. A few different people mentioned different ideas as to what to use in the tank to keep from blowing up the motor. So what should I use? Sta-Bil Marine? K100? Amsoil octance booster? I will order any product, I just want a sure fire way to solve this issue, and both of my sleds are totally stock.

Thanks,
Zack

Stock jets provided the motor is stock....

That has not let me down yet....The newest sled we have owned is my 2000 xc, and we have not had any issues yet in 15+ years.

Just gas, with no additive?

Zack

Zack - of the three you have listed, the Amsoil would be your best bet - it contains toluene and ether - K100 would be second - it contains ethers and a small amount of ethylene glycol (anti freeze) - after an exhausting MSDS search, I cannot determine what is in Sta Bil Marine and I would not put anything in my fuel unless I knew what was in it - do an MSDS search before using any additive - if they do not clearly indicate what is in it, don't use it - a large percentage of fuel additives, including octane boosters, contain alcohol which will only compound the problem!! ;)!

Interesting link:

Pretty much states that there are no "real additives", just get the higher octane rated fuel & keep the fuel FRESH.
Check the different links within this site.

Interesting.

Oh, & they do seem to mention that the ethanol is not really the best thing to come along in the fuel supply chain.

Just as has been stated many times over, its not that great, it lowers MPG & lowers HP ratings & not very friendly to engine components.

Honestly, the best stuff...RACE FUEL..that stuff has not been screwed with!!
But, I digress.

I've read alot on that link before - don't agree with everything they say, but there is alot of good info on there - I got a kick out of this one;

18. Airplanes (all aircraft) are exempt from using ethanol blends and all alcohol fuels.

I guess they don't want to see an engine sh*t out at 10,000 feet!!! LOL!!

This part of the link is good info regarding additives;

I don' agree with there condemnation of K100 because is contains Ethylene Glycol (an alcohol) - it also contains Butoxyethanol, Monobutyl ether - both of which are ethers and ethers bond with water and do not separate - the MSDS on K100 does not give the percentages of the ingredients but my guess would be the Ethylene Glycol content is small!

Like horkn said, we've been forced to use this for 15+ yeares here in SE WI. I have never had a burn down issue using this gas. As long as it is fresh, and not sitting around for a few months in a can, I have never had any problems. However, all my sleds have been stock in the fuel delivery department, except a 1998 XTC 700 I thinned the head gasket on. I even used regular 87 octane in my 2 stokes. :letitsnow

the race fuel by me is now reformulated 10%crapinal dont you think if it was any good they would put it in planes they no its crap,all so i was told our millitary doesnt use it but i cant prove it as far as i can tell there is only one way to be certain you dont run crapinal fill up at airport but i dont know what effect the lead would have if any i have tried many of the lottery juices merc makes one called quick clean it seems to work for cleaning carb circiuts and jets when the jelly of many colors is present but doesnt make bad fuel good just keeps motor running longer

If your worried and want to add anything I would go with Amsoil gas stabilizer or gas detergent not their octane booster.

I just checked out the k100 stuff at the local shop. Is it really worth getting. It seems like it does a pretty good job with keeping the gas go to go..

I have run quite a bit of of avgas in all my sleds and farm equipment. Everything without an o2 sensor or cat converte that i own. I get the stuff from sump fuel that my buddy at work pulls from the trucks everynight. No problems with it at all. It is 100 octane low lead fuel which is the same type used by most piston aircraft. It has a very long storage life and smells great to boot. I mix it about 50/50 with pump gas. Every year my carbs look like new when i go to clean them. The only pit fall i have found is the spark plugs get a bit of lead fouling but is easy to clean off.

I should also state that most small airports will sell you it some even have pay at the pump with debit cards. The current going rate near me is 3.99 per gal for the pay at the pump deal. Would think that buying a 55gal drum worth would get most people through the season if mixed lightly with pump gas.

I usually just run the high octain fuel all the time and good oil such as amsoil, klots, or may be others but them are my choice. ive got about 7,000 miles on my 2000 srx, most are hard miles and never even rerung it until just this summer, (only cause i got it hot once due to a stud through a cooler) so i played it safe and rerung it and it didnt need it, everything looked awsome still, i was really impressed with that many miles on it.

A couple of products have hit the market since this post was made - Torco has come out with an octane booster called Torco Accelerator that is made up of Toulene, Ether, and Xylene - these components are in higher concentrations in race gas - Ether's are what was used in fuels for oxygenation before Ethanol - they have a higher BTU than any other component in fuel and they are an excellent fuel additive!!
If you are looking to just stabilize your fuel and not concerned with raising the octane level, a product called Soltron is a good one - I've been using this in all of my gas powered engines that don't get used on a regular basis with excellent results - it is suppose to contain "enzymes" that keep the ethanol in check - I know it sounds hokie, but remember, ethanol is a food by product and it is prone to contamination after it sits for an extended period - I researched this stuff extensively before I bought any, and it seems to work - just a couple more options you might want to consider!! ;)!

K100MG is all you need been running it for going on 3 years. Everyone I know i.e. landscapers and snow removal crews swear by it and so do I.

Did you ever look at your carbs between seasons? How do you store your sled?

I store it by adding K100MG to a full tank of gas. Then dumping a cap full of synthetic 2 stroke oil down each spark plug hole.
