Awesome site!

I just picked up a mint 1998 SRX700 that has been stored for 3 years. I'm not new to Yamaha sleds but am not mechanically inclined either. What should I look for with regards to checking over known issue areas? Also, I've read alot on here about power valve cables pulling through. How and where do I check for this? Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I just moved back from an 07 Attak to this SRX 700. I've had one ride so far and have to say, this sled puts a bigger smile on my face than the Attak. I'll take the lesser suspension to gain fun factor.

Thanks,
Testarosa

wire harness for rub thru, crank mod for phase welding , w arm for cracks ,power valves for pull threw ,and the skid bushings see if the shock is hitting the track ,you will see marks if it is , probaly some i am forgetting ......to see if pv is pulled threw just unscrew the 4 allen bolts and see if the valve comes out with it ...or stays behind ...if all are connected you can just put them back in with no adjustment required .....but that dont mean you dont have one about ready to pull threw ....you will have to idle the sled below 900 and mark the pulley ....and remove valves from there .to actually see if one is about to pull threw or cable ball is ready to snap off .....

Testarosa do a search on power valves, you'll be reading all night,i would clean adjust them first thing, then search W arm and read, also have your dealer run your VIN number to see if the crank has been updated,(search too). :)

Ok odd question but I don't get it. How is it that a 12 yr old sled is better then a 4 stroke. Don't get me wrong I do like the 2 stroke but with a 4 stoke being more hp and fuel injection with no engine problems why would you take a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke?

I just had to ask and welcome to the 2 stroke family :bump:

probably not a bad idea to either clean your carbs yourself (plenty of info here do a search) or if youre not comfortable with it have someone do it for u. hate to see you burn er up when you first get it do to a dirty carb

Storage

Did he mist the engine before storing it, also was the gas drained out, what octane did he run.
I suggest stepping up main jets 1 size AND increasing oil usage a smidgen. Like everyone has said ALL 98 had crank issues, not perhpas or maybe, DID, if you pull motor and remove crank they can check it and weld it for around 100 bones. Change out those case seals while your tinkering about. Check with your local Yammie dealer as one of them may have fixed the re-call.
Im running a 98 lower but I did just as I suggested above, 300miles no troubles thus far. Good luck.

Clean carbs and make sure you have 100% fresh gas! Check the jet sizes while you're in there and make sure the sizing is right for your location and temp. With all the engines going down lately consider going one size richer to be on the safe side. A main bearing just went out of my 98 and when I checked out the crank it wasn't welded even though it's in the dealer system as being completed! :dunno:
I love my 2 stroke and want it back!

J K Auto, the 4-stroke gave me increased reliability and peace of mind for sure. However, weight was the main issue. I got into a lot of hairy situations with the Attak where I went for a quick correction one way or another as I have over the years, but always felt the sled was in control and I was along for the ride. I've only had the srx for a single short ride and pushed it out of control a couple of times on purpose just for kicks and I could bring it back much easier than the attak every time. I tried to change my riding style to suit the Attak but never really felt the same control as either of my previous 2-strokes (Phazer, Exciter, Vmax 600, F-Cat 7, and SXR 700).

Thanks for the input. I was on one and felt the same. I do like that there is alot less work on the newer ones but the yama 2 stroke just flat out runs great impo.

Now back on topic. Just do what the other guys suggested and you will have a great running machine. Also check the compression out and do a leak down to see how the engine is doing. Also no matter what make sure the carbs are clean.
;)!
