Well I am finally going to upgrade my sled. I have a 97 700sx that is all stock. Love the sled always been reliable but my back needs better suspension.
Here are my choices:
2009 Nytro RTX $7300 brand new, I know that is a steal price but I have to drive 16hrs to get it. Even with the deal this is more than I want to spend.
2003 Viper ER excellent shape with 2800 miles. $3000 add M10 air skid about $1500 so $4500 total, or I could find a used M10 and rebuild say $1000 so about $4000 total.
Opinions? on ride mostly how will the Viper with M10 compare to a new Nytro or visa versa?
I ride trails, in Western NY (Mayville) rr beds, fields, wooded trails conditions vary all over from powdery fields to huge moguls on trials. It is the late day large moguls that really tear me up these days, just cant motor across them like I used too.
Not really concerned with ultimate speed, I do like to have good power but seems both of these would be stronger than my 700sx which is plenty for my likes.
I really want to do a 4 stroke mostly for the reduced operating cost and no more oil smelly clothes but thinking the Viper may be a stepping stone.
Should I bight the bullet and get the Nytro?
Thanks for your opinions
Mark

There's nothing like new! I wouldn't stretch myself too thin with buying new if I were you, but other wise you can't really go wrong. The Viper would be a good second choice, good fuel mileage, decent power, can't lose with an M10, either.

See as you and your buddy have the M10's and you obviously ride together, how does the Airwave and a shock'ed M10 compare to each other?? Any negatives to the Airwave??
I'm very happy with my M-10 and it is probably the main reason i'm in no hurry to replace my 98 - sx. Do your homework on the "air" M-10. I have heard some bad things about these, but it might have just been the early editions.

I have a Viper w/M10 and love it. I am not lucky enough to have the $$$$ to spend on a newer machine, and the Viper is just plain fun to ride.
My buddy had a 02 Viper for 4 years, and moved up to a Attak GT. Now he says he is considering going back to an M10'd Viper because he misses the light sled. He also said he doesn't like the engine braking of the four-stroke....
Depends also if you like to wrench on your sleds. The newer four-strokes really don't need much maintenence, but the older 2-strokes need a little maintenence to keep them running well.
You might look for a clean used four-stroke. There are several low mileage RX-1's near me for sale for under 4 grand. One has a M10 under it, so you get the best of both worlds....
Here's the Craigslist link:

Just my thoughts....

Thanks for the responses!
I bought the Viper today, too bad there is no snow.
Also bought an m10 air (Not the airwave) standard M10 with air springs. They say this has more adjustability for rider weight / style.
I am going to ride the Viper stock (Snow please!) and then install the M10 for comparison.
Vmaxx4 like your SX! I am going to keep my 97sx 700 for backup / spare buddy sled. It was my first and only so far NEW sled and always spot on reliability wise. My buddies with Cats and Skidoo were always messing with something while I was ready to ride with the old 97sx.
Will the skid from the Viper fit the 97sx? Thought I might transplant it to the 97 as the Viper has more travel. If that makes sense.

Yes any proaction skid will fit your sx or if your skid is still good, just swap the shocks, limiter straps & add smaller spacers to the transfer rods and your good to go. Then sell of the newer skid.
I would not even waste time riding the viper with it's stock skid when u have the M10. It's the only way to go!
Love mine!

i've put almost 3,000m on airwave and have nothing to complain about. had FAST change the oil in the rear fox shock to 10w since i weigh over 250lbs. the airwave is better in the stutter bumps as the stroke is much smoother. bud's ohlins m-10 is a 136 which helps him out more than a 121 in the stutters but not as good as the airwave. the only potential issue with the airwave if you have a air line break then you are done, but no issues so far. i'll be getting an airwave next time as well. it is worth the money as it does make that big a difference. at the most i lost 5mph on top end but who cares.
Yes this is one thing I have heard, that a failure in the air system would cause total colapse. Would be a good idea to fabricate a bar to install in place of the failed shock if needed to get you home/nearest road.Thumper1 said:i've put almost 3,000m on airwave and have nothing to complain about. had FAST change the oil in the rear fox shock to 10w since i weigh over 250lbs. the airwave is better in the stutter bumps as the stroke is much smoother. bud's ohlins m-10 is a 136 which helps him out more than a 121 in the stutters but not as good as the airwave. the only potential issue with the airwave if you have a air line break then you are done, but no issues so far. i'll be getting an airwave next time as well. it is worth the money as it does make that big a difference. at the most i lost 5mph on top end but who cares.
