your miles on a viper

for all viper owners, quick question...

how many miles do you have on it? i have 4700mi on mine, and the dealer is trying to tell me to replace the pistons and rings at 5000mi! WTF did i buy an extended warenty for. the sled is covered till feb of 2006!

what do you all think and any run in's with this?
 
A safe rule of thumb(as I was told) every 3500, the piston skirts become weak,and compression check them.

OR just do a compression check. I agree that a set og rings would suffice only if the compression is down.
 
Oh Yeah

I have over 9000 miles on my viper and I have never replaced anything but a chaincase bearing.

I'd like to see that on any other sled, given I have had a few electrical problems!
 
I highly doubt you need pistons and rings yet unless you have had a lean condition. I have seen some old 1997 Yamaha SX's with 10,000kms and 12,000kms and the engine has never been apart.
 
compression is top notch! not sure what it tested, have to go in the garage and look. always have run amsoil in it (series 2000) same thing my worked banshee gets. best oil i feel.
 
What evidence does the dealer see that prompts him to make this suggestion? It is not the Yamaha recommended service routine, unless there is evidence that warrants it. Ask your dealer to share with you what indications he sees that warrant replacing these items.

I'd say unless there's some known mechanical issue I wouldn't worry about it at all. I have 5100 miles on my piped Viper with no issues and it's been ridden hard and shows no signs of any issues whatsoever. My SRX had 6000 miles on it before I burned it down and that was purely self induced. I ride with 3 other guys who all own SRXs and one had 9500 trouble free miles on his '98 before he decided to have it ported and re-ringed while he had it apart. He now has over 12,500 miles on it and it's still going strong. The other 2 have well over 6000 miles on them and they run like new. Tell your dealer he's nuts and ride with confidence.

There is no way you need pistons and rings. I think the dealer is trying to get some money out of you..

thanks for all your help guys. i knew something didn't sound right. why would you want to open up a perfectly running motor to change the pistons and rings. the damn thing is covered till feb 06... i'm gonna run her till she goes!
 
i just rebuilt my buddies viper has 4,000 miles on it,these are hard miles, i replaced the pistons, rings ,wristpins, and wristpin bearings, the piston skirts is where the problem was ,there was a .006 differance between the top of the piston to the skirt of the piston, thats way out of tollerance, the other parts i replaced only because thats what i do when i rebield a motor. cheap insurance

My 02 Viper had almost 8,000 U.P. miles on it after last season. Track clips worn and some missing. Also almost every bearing and bushing in suspension was SHOT! W arm was cracked on bottom side. Ended up putting on new 1.25 Ripsaw, all new suspension bushings & bearings and some wheels too, new W arm (dealer paid for), new bearings on shafts opposite the chaincase, rebuilt all four stock shocks, added 4th wheel, rebuilt both clutches including new clutch springs. Now ready for another 8,000.
