99 700SX backfire/dead throttle spot

check the nozzle on the # 1 cyl. it is supposed to be a Q-8 the other two are Q-4's. maybe it has been changed . if not then you are probably loading up at mid range. drop your needle one notch in that cylinder.

Nozzle being the brass sleeve that the needle goes in? I didn't notice any numbers on it but I'll look again.

Drop a full notch or just move a washer up? I'll give it a try, I'm running out of things to take apart on the carb.
 
Just in case someone else ever has a similar problem, it turns out it was the CDI. I've probably put on 600km after replacing it with a new one and it runs as good as ever.
