The primary clutch on my 98 700mm moves sideways about 1/4 of an inch. I can see some shims on the inside, but they don`t seem to do much, you can spin them with your finger. The bolt in the center of the shaft on the outside is tight, all that being said it still shifts smooth and nothing seems wrong. I`m just wondering should there be any movement? something don`t seem right.

it should be tight.Worn out bushings maybe.If it moves that much,it will probably wobble and get worse,will blow a belt first maybe or the clutch may go Kabooooom!!!!!If it does,I don't want to be close when it explodes.Clutch should be tight basically.

as long as you are not making the shaft wear down by this looseness either.
sounds like he is refering to his secondary. never seen any shims behind a primary as it is a tapered shaft, and why would you shim the backside? if in fact this is the case, perhaps if the clutch was properly installed,(read no shims) there would be no movement. lets take a moment and confirm as to which clutch we are talking about. primary: the one that is bolted to the engine. secondary: the one closest to your left knee. that being said, now we can intelligently assess the question at hand.

Im thinking that if indeed it was the primary clutch he was thinking about, he would be looking for it in China right about now since that's where it would fly to if it was loose and sloppy...

Took a closer look this morning ,yes indeed it is the secondary clutch (sorry).There is a bolt going through on the outside, right behind the back of the bolt is washer which has no movement, then there are two shims that are not big enough to fill the small gap, the entire assembly drive shaft and all moves sideways maybe 1/4in.

Ok then thats normal it's the belt self alignment(2mm) feature.

A quarter inch seems like quite a bit. Mine did this this year, and I found that a nut on the back side of the plate that the clutch shaft goes through right behind the clutch itself had come off. There is a bracket on the back side of the plate with two stud bolts in it. One nut was gone, the other was loose. I got out my extendable magnet and ran it around in the bottom of the belly pan. About the third try, up came the nut on the end. Took some patience to get the nut started without removing the air box, but was able to do it. Very minimal in/out movement on the clutch & shaft now. Might be worth checking to verify yours is still ok.
