trying to figure out what I need to do.
Left cyl= 60psi
right cyl=30psi
I have not taken anything apart yet. engine runs ok but not alot of power and alot of vibration. Wondering if rings and gasket is good enought 2300mi on orig engine. This will be my first time doing a rebuild!! looking to learn so any help is appreciated. I have a manual and most common tools what else might I need?

wow those # are low on a running motor. you need a minimum of 90psi for a motor to run. how long was the sled sitting? rings might only be stuck with varnish. i would pour seafoam into 1 cyl at a time at top-dead-centre and leave it overnight. after doing both cylinders re-test compression after spinning the motor to clear the seafoam out with plugs removed.
if the compression # do not come up, you will need a cosmetic gasket kit witch has head, base and exh gaskets. then get a set of yamaha rings for the pistons as they should be ok still.

i'd change the pistons as well, the little pins for the rings fall out and your rings end up eating your cylinder. Happened to me just over 1,200 miles or so, new cylinders aren't cheap and used aren't easy to come by.
I only get about 200 -300 miles a year on it. I went on a trip a few weeks back and she ran great. Brought it home and tried to go ice fishing. this weekend and no go. plugs were bad. Put new plugs in and was good to go just no power. The comp tester is new and not cheap. I am planning on pulling the heads and exhaust off today. I will take pics. Thanks guys.

I have over 6000 miles on my 97 600 venture. The motor was rebuilt under warranty by Yamaha due to the ring pin issue. I don't know how severe the issue was on my particular motor, but I know it was rebuilt quite a while ago, and I can bet my motor has at least 3500-4000 miles on it since it was rebuilt. My sled has 122 psi in both cylinders with a compression test.
If you have the original pistons in it, I would definitely replace them with new pistons as this was a HUGE problem in 97. If you are really unlucky, the ring snags the port and makes a big mess. If the pistons are in spec, and not the original part #, then I would put a new set of rings in it since you have it apart.
Those pistons are pretty black with no wash. Do you use a lot of oil? If so, I would guess you oil pump is bad (they fail open), as that was the other issue in 97 600 twins. I replaced my oil pump this year and it uses a lot less oil, smokes less, and has more power.
Where in WI are you?

You've got some issues there. Looks like plenty of detonation. It that the rings I see in the pic?? If so you have burned off some piston. If the cylinders are still good, you can get away with pistons, rings, bearing, and gaskets. If not then it's going to get spendy.
Yep that's ugly.

Check with your yamaha dealer with your sleds VIN # and check if it has ever been rebuilt by Yamaha. If they have not ever done a recall on it, see if they will step up and help. You never know.
The cylinder's bore looks gouged. If so, that isn't good at all.

Well I talked to a couple Yamaha dealerships and called Yamaha and they will not cover anything. So I sent the Jugs out to be repaired and replated and ordered everything to complete a top end rebuild.
Good Luck with Yamaha I have a 97 600twin that had a cylinder get gouged by the ring and they wouldn't help it was too old but you never know its worth a try. There is a place in plymouth wi that recoat cylinder that is very reasonable Millennium Tech. www.mt-llc.com. I am in richland center wi and I have some 600 twin stuff also just picked up a sx 600 with a bad crank going to pick it up this weekend it might have some good piston and cylinder on it. If you are interested in any parts and piece and if I can help you let me know.

There are 3 places in WI that replate cylinders.
The closest to you is in Eagle River, Image enterprises http://www.imageenterprises.com/cylinder-crank-rebuilding.cfm
, but Millenium Tech, and there is another in FDL that does as well.
Image says they have ones in stock for quick exchange. But maybe mtnmax600 above can help you out.
IMHO, yamaha should have RECALLED all 07 600 twins and rebuilt them or at least exchanged the defective piston batch for ones of a known good quality. Instead they simply fixed the ones that blew up in the first couple of years. As good as Yamaha is at making sleds, they sure do not like to issue recalls. That really is a shame.
Yours has to be the 3rd 97 600 twin I have heard that has gone south this year from a poorly made part 12+ years ago. They knew about it, but did not recall them voluntarily.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have sent the Jug out for repair and replating. I got lucky and only one was bad. $250 for the repair etc and $250 to complete a topend rebuild. While I am waiting for the parts to come in I am going to attempt to take out the air box and carbs. Do some carb cleaning. I found good info here and some pics. I am thinking of doing some of the free mods listed such as reeds and head gasket and exhaust. I will continue to document the project through completion. wish me luck!
ebay had jugs on there you can get for a lot cheaper than 250Flakes said:Thank you everyone for your input. I have sent the Jug out for repair and replating. I had mine redone for 180 each
250 was an estimated cost due to damage to the jug. it was in rough shape. I was looking out on Ebay and everything I seen out there would need to be replated it looked like. I have a question about how to re-sleve the cylinder. Does anyone know what is involved in this process?

Re sleeving involves taking a liner of a different material, usually Iron, and then heating the cylinder, and cooling the liner and getting them to fit. Or something like that.
It is definitely not something that can be done with regular shop tools.

OK I made a mistake and forgot to pull the coolant drain plugs before pulling the jugs and now have coolant in the crank case. I am sure there are metal shavings as well from the scorn jug and piston. I was thinking I would take the shop vac to it. But thought I better get some input before I opps again. How would you proceed with cleaning out the crank case?
Thank you
Thank you

sleeving a cyl. requires it to be bored out to the o.d. of the sleeve, heat & cool & slip in, then bore sleeve to fit piston. this is a last resort for a motor with nicasil plated cyl.s. A shop vac & blow gun should get it clean.
