Coming off a 99 and now back onto an 02 SRX 9 yrs later

After the 99 SRX 7 I went to a 01 ZR 800 l.e, 01.5 MXZ Renegade 800, 04 Viper S, 05 F7 efi, 08 Nytro FX and most recently a 08 Dragon 700. Well after 9 yrs and all those sleds Im picking up an 02 SRX this Saturday. I realize Im going back to a sled that wont bang the Saturday afternoon moguls as well as most but I really miss my 99 SRX and never found speed and cornering that satisfied me after several attempts of trying sled after sled. There wasnt much I didnt love about my 99 including 13+ mpg, low oil consumption, sick top speed, razor cornering and incredible handwarmers to mention a few. Other than the dcs, how much different is this 02 from the 99? I know they made some changes in 00 but how do they really compare stock for stock. thanks!

2000 and up have more aggressive porting and a 3d ignition system along with a way better headlight to name just a few items.

Yeah

^^
The dam headlight will actually be bright while idling...2000+ made more horsepower, but IM sure your aware of that. Id reset oil adjustment for 45.1 and go 1 size up on mains...no burn down and rod issues. Since you've owned 1 Im sure you know these tidbits also...welcome back to SRX land eh.

Are you saying richen or lean it to 45:1? My 99 was crazy lean--probably 75:1 or so.

jet it to 2001 specs, peak rpm is 82 climing to 8500 on the big end, oil 20 to
22mm target 45:1,search the site for a killer clutch set up or i could give it
to ya. you'll love the sled keep it stock and watch the DSC it'll save ya.hold
on she'll rip.

Is the 2001 rich enough? I know with E10 gas some of these older sleds are having increased issues since gas has changed over the years. Is the dcs that good that you can run it lean and not have to worry? Btw, plz PM that clutch set-up!

I just turned 8000 miles on my 2002. Just rode 600 miles in 2 days. I love the suspension that Yamaha put under it.
Awesome!
This sled has just under 6k and is totally unmolested. Im pretty sure all of the drive bearings are original yet. Are your driveshaft and jackshaft bearings still original. Whats wise to replace on these with 5k+ miles before failure? drive bearings, chain, chain tensioner, etc, etc??

'01 jetting was about spot on it's richer then '02, because yamaha leaned it
up some in '02 knowing the DCS will keep er safe, well gas was better back
then, jetting to '01 AND premium fuel (more then 91)you should hardy
see that light.

both bearings on pto side can be grease easly with a needle greaser.

The drive bearings I changed at 7k miles. I NEVER had a problem with the factory jetting. Most people mis diagnose the DCS light coming on with lean jetting. That is not the case. The DCS light comes on more often because the power valves need help or they did a poor job of clutching and the motor gets loaded on the mid to top end and starts to detonate. Ask me, I will tell you 8000 miles and stock-jetting .I was one of the only sleds out when it was -20 at the end of last month and we put on 700 miles in 2 days. Guess what... no DCS light. My sled is clutched correctly the power valves are adjusted and stock jetting.

Great info! I assume this is all with 93 octane gas. I did some reading last night about the 02/dcs and rich jetting vs increased octane. I am interested in your clutching though...

From what I have experienced and read on here, I agree that with good/fresh 92-94 octane fuel most DCS problems would come back to clutching and how the motor gets loaded through it. My 2002 has stock jetting specs. no issues with DCS. Just make sure ALL specs. are stock including shims under needle etc!
